Is it possible to go back to rowing 🚣🏽 (skiffing) after an APR? I had the operation only 6 weeks ago, and the doctor told me to take up a different sport.

Way too soon to begin rowing. Heal first. Slowly and steadily you will get back to being you. You just don't need any complications at this point.
FYI: I, too, row.

Hi Deb,

As you can see, the outpouring of love and support from this website will help you to find the strength to lift yourself up and out of your current emotional situation. I am lucky to have my husband by my side through all of this, so I will not even pretend to know how you feel and what you're going through alone. I do know that I have great friends on this site and in my life that have been by my side, and hopefully you have many by your side as well. You do have a lot of new friends here. Please feel free to talk through anything that is on your mind. We all go through a confidence deficit when we go through an ostomy surgery. Our body has been marred and your mind feels that way sometimes too. It is tough to move on, but you will. You will be stronger once you realize that you are still the beautiful woman you were prior to your surgery. Hopefully, you can reach out to a local support group and find some additional friends in your same situation. It always helps to have a sounding board wherever you find it!

Thank you, I understand I need to take it slow and heal. Just wanted to know if I will be able to get back to doing something I love 😊

I still walk my dog, not 4 miles like before, much to his disappointment, but we are working up to it. Good things take time! πŸ•β€οΈ

You can row, just give yourself plenty of time to heal properly first, which will take longer than you think.

I would think you would want to wear a support belt when you are healthy enough to ski again. Ostomies can be prone to hernias due to the hole in the abdominal wall. And a colostomy is more susceptible than an ileostomy.

Yes, this is good advice - rowing is a very strenuous activity, so a support belt would definitely be recommended.

I would start with more general fitness and work your way back up to rowing. Six weeks is too soon for sure. But in 3-6 months, you should be fit enough to start using a rowing machine gently.

Of course, when I wrote "ski," I meant "skiff." Auto-correct lacks the intelligence to know what I meant. :-)

You need to heal first. Your muscles and tissue take a lot of time. If you develop a prolapse in that area, it cannot be fixed, only treated. Screwed for life.

Best reply & advice. Let your surgeon, RN, or PT guide your healing. You cannot cure a hernia or prolapse.

It's been a year since my surgery. I'm back to skiffing and racing 🚣🏽πŸ₯‡! Not the senior category, but a win is a win. Never thought I would be able to get back to doing what I love!
I'm getting back my fitness and getting on with everything.
