Dealing with Bathroom Odors Without an Exhaust Fan

Hello all,

So I've moved to a new apartment that has no exhaust fan. Unheard of, but yes, no bathroom fan! Can't always afford M9 these days since I'm now retired after getting sick. I'm allergic to most air fresheners.

Does anyone know of a device or a way to exhaust the smells? I do put bleach spray and use the bowl brush, but sometimes it's not enough.

When I Google, I only find a dehumidifier, but that's only for moisture.

Does the bathroom have a window?

They make canister-style odor eliminators, but I'm not sure if they'd be enough to absorb that aroma. Plus, some put out their own fragrance, so you may not be able to tolerate that. No fan, no window….🤷‍♂️

Every morning when I enjoy my big cup of coffee I scroll through this site and this warm feeling just overwhelms me.

I never post anything (too shy and it feels like I don’t have anything of interest to share tbh) but I sure read a lot of posts from you guys and they are so informative, supportive encouraging and so so full of love and a big dose of humor.

I feel like part of the best family in the world (even though I am just sitting quietly in the corner lol).

I just wanted to share that feeling and say thanks to all of you for being so wonderful.

And also, please keep some fingers crossed for me this week. I have my blood test on Thursday, checking my CA 125 levels. Ovarian cancer reoccurrence fear unlocked again. I hate it!

Lots of love from Sweden

No, it does not.

Yes, this sucks. No fan or window. I see they make a toilet seat that has a built-in exhaust fan, but it's over $400.

Life saver mints or Tic Tacs help. Candles if you find a good one. Springtime garden flowers.🌸

I get eczema from fragrance in the air, so that's not an option.

I'd hate to get things caught up in that. 😳🥴😁

Probably not for you since you don't agree with scented things, but I could see a lot of ostomates buying the getlooloo.com freshener.

I can send some deodorant - I sent you a PM.

A number of older-style apartment buildings here in Australia don't have exhaust fans, and they can't be retrofitted due to there being no gap or space between the ceiling and the floor above.

It may depend on whether your apartment or bathroom is situated against an external wall. If it is, you can have exhaust fans fitted through the side wall; although here, you would probably need approval from the building's Body Corporate before proceeding.

Maybe use Poo-Pourri - it is supposed to be sprayed into the toilet before pooh, but since you are allergic to scents, perhaps once you are finished, spray directly into the toilet water, slam the lid, hold your nose, and run! 🏃‍♀️. jb

One of my bathrooms has no window or fan either. This is what I use…

I found it on Amazon; search “Hamilton Beach TrueAir fan.”

P.S. It's not a scented air freshener. It's a plug-in fan with replaceable carbon filters.

Try putting some peppermint Altoids in the pouch. It really works. 🌈👍

Buy some cheap deodorant, spray it in the air, or go old school. Before any M9 drops, etc., were available, back in the day, it was normal to light a match.

Poo-Puri or whatever it's called works pretty well. I've been in some pretty enclosed spots and had some on hand.

Guys, scented things mess with her; she needs non-scented ideas.

Maybe a clothespin then. 🦨

One thing that can help is to not let the source of the smell stay in the air too long. By this, I mean flush as soon as your output hits the water, and then again if it's taking a bit of time to get it all out, then again after cleaning the end of the pouch. I know it uses a lot more water, but it definitely reduces the smell.

Thanks, I read your message and replied.

That's what I usually do, but also in this apartment, the initial flush goes well, but the second flush doesn't flush all the way as I'm rinsing. So I have to wait about 5 minutes. I've contacted maintenance, but I have to see them come. I'm looking into either an air purifier or there is a ventless exhaust fan on Amazon.

UPDATE: Maintenance came in and put in new toilet guts, and it now flushes normally, although that first empty in the morning is pretty smelly with no M9.

I am prescribed "salts odor eliminating spray" from Salts Health Care; maybe it may help you.

I never had a fan, but windows are the law in the USA. My M-9 was covered by insurance. Sensitive to odors? I saw lots of hypoallergenic room deodorizers on Amazon. Maybe lemon might agree?

I'm in the US, but there is no bathroom window in this place. It's an older building, but very sturdy and soundproof, which I like. The only thing is I wish it were smell-proof with a bath fan. My insurance will not cover M9, unfortunately. I think when I get Medicare in a few years, they might cover it.

That's amazing! Thank you! I just ordered mine.

I live in a tiny house, and the smell has just been lingering. Thankfully, I live in a warm climate and can open doors and windows, which helps.
