Trying Strawberry Yogurt with Dietary Restrictions

I have always been told that eating strawberries was a no-no. Seeds. Don't eat things with seeds. So I recently decided I wanted to take a big step and try strawberry yogurt. The pieces of strawberry in it are so small... they couldn't hurt me? Right? Does anyone who has some limited dietary issues ever try strawberry yogurt? I know some people say they can eat anything, but I can't. But I am trying to be brave and broaden my scope of things I can eat. I am just feeling nervous. I don't want another blockage. The last one was miserable. But what harm can really come from a little yogurt? Right? It's Oikos brand. I don't know if it has little pieces in it or just flavor. I couldn't tell from the packaging. Anyone eat Oikos yogurt?

Have you thought of straining it? I do that with sauces I want to eat since they have seeds in them, or I eat a burger sauce but strain out the pickles and onions, so I get the flavor but not the other stuff.

Nervous but excited about tomorrow. I have been reading some of the threads here and am brand new to the site. I am grateful to have had the ileostomy so my body had a chance to heal but am truly hoping all goes well with the operation and future.

I have a collapsed disk in my back and sleeping on it for the past 7 months because of the bag has caused me constant daily excruciating pain. I haven't slept through the night and have had so many accidents.

I am so glad I found this site. Gained so much information so I am much better prepared for what happens post operation and what worked for people diet and supplement (fiber) wise. Thank you for that.

I hadn't thought of that. It turns out the Oikos yogurt is strawberry "flavored"; there is no actual strawberry in it. I had some tonight for dessert after dinner. It was good. Nice for a change from bland yogurt. Vanilla gets old when you can't put anything in it, like berries or nuts or something. So, I guess I was worried for nothing. I couldn't tell from the packaging, though, that it didn't have actual bits of strawberry in it.

I am glad it didn't... I know some stuff will say it's flavored, and you think no seed, or etc. Then boom, there is. But good this one wasn't like that. And hey, the strainer idea is always available for other things.

Hi infinitycastle, our small intestines are all different. Some of us have adhesions which make eating seeds more difficult. My own experiences have been varied. I can't eat figs at all. Too many blueberries and strawberries cause me pain as they navigate their way through. Pickled red cabbage is a definite no-no. Experimenting is the way forward. Very, very small amounts only so you can get a taste of what you are missing. I haven't read your history to see if you have had blockages in the past. I can assure you it will be enough to put you off that particular food forever! Good luck.

I've been eating strawberries for over 30 years with an ileostomy and never had any problems. That's not to say you or others wouldn't have problems, as we're all different in what we can eat. It can even change by the day; that's why you should always try something at least three times before you rule it out of your diet, and even then try it again in years to come, as our digestive system is just like life—always changing. I'm a recent convert to using a Nutribullet juicer to put fruit and vegetables in that my stomach can't tolerate to keep my diet healthy.

I had a blockage last January, and it was awful. I got so dehydrated from vomiting and output being so high that my kidneys nearly failed. They also had to put an NG tube in me and nothing by mouth for four days. I swear I was so hungry and miserable by the end of those four days that I almost let them do surgery. They were consulting with the surgeon daily to see if they needed to go in and fix the blockage. Luckily, on day four, it cleared. I never want that to happen to me again. It was so scary. I had IV after IV of fluids. It was constant, and they'd wake me up at night to change the fluid bag. They woke me up in the early morning to take blood. Every day they did that. I was just wanting a shower. I wanted to get the tube out of me. I wanted to go home. Never again. Whatever it takes.

I have a juicer, but I don't use it. It's in the basement storage room. I used it a few times, but all the leftover fruit and veggie scraps made me think it was a waste. So I haven't used it since. Sometimes I buy carrot juice in the store or a fruit juice like pineapple because I can't eat pineapple. If I get a hankering for something, I try to find a juice with it in it, even V8 sometimes. I just keep trying. It's not that I miss strawberries, although I do a little; it's just that I want something with the flavor but no red dye. Red dye is an issue for me, and a lot of strawberry-flavored things have red dye in them. So when I saw a yogurt with no red dye that I could see on the label and it was strawberry, I thought, great, I can have that. But then I wondered if it had bits of strawberry in it. Thankfully, it does not.

Yeah, I like the strainer idea. I am going to keep that in mind. Thanks.

Sounds dreadful. Glad it cleared without surgery. Did you find out what food or reason caused the blockage?

Hi,

I would say you are on the right track. Sometimes you just have to experiment and see. I would say to try very small portions at first. If that goes well, then try a little more. Everything in moderation is a good adage. Good luck.

Too gassy. Try liquid strawberry juice.

No, they never knew what caused it. I suspect it was the rice I ate with cheese and broccoli in it. I chewed and chewed, but I think it got stuck. That was my guess. My mom thinks it could have been any number of things. I was eating peeled raw apples at the time, and she thinks it could have been that. So we don't know because there was no surgery.

Just eat the stuff and enjoy; it's only strawberries.

It is hard to find strawberry juice without red dye in it. But I keep looking. Also, sugar content is an issue. I try to drink low-sugar things, like Gfit. I think there is a watermelon-strawberry one of those. I might try it.

It's only that I could have another blockage, and this time I have to have major surgery.

That's what I did with chickpea pasta. I had just a little bit to see how it would go. It went okay. I haven't had any since that one experiment, though.

Go at your own speed that makes you feel comfortable, regardless of what anyone else says. You know your body and what's going on. You know best how to handle it.

Thanks. I know that is true, but I still like to get a little advice on others' experiences with things. I know for me, I have a lot more limitations than many on these boards do. So, I have to take everything with that in mind.

Remember everybody's body is different; what one person's body does doesn't mean yours will. That's where you have to try and find out what works for your body. And having to deal with complications and food restrictions, I used very well that where you try new things when you're comfortable.

I may never try new things then. I am not comfortable with anything that is outside my realm of things that I know work. I get worried about blockages. Then I don't want to try things. But I do get curious. I just get scared too.

I don't get blockages, just a lot of gas and leaking. Blockages require a hospital stay.

There's no fun in that. Not willing to try things is letting your mind win for no reason. Conquer those strawberry seed things, and you can move up to some good Mexican food like…

I'll warn you now, everything was really good: the pork, chicken, cheese, cactus, etc. However, I advise you not to try the jalapeño; it made me cry, nose running all over, and I had to go to the restroom to wipe the tears and blow my nose. My girlfriend laughed, and the waiter cracked a smile. I'm sure he said to himself… pendejo. Wait, maybe she did too. 🤔😂 I'll save the jalapeño popper story for another day. 🥵 Don't be afraid to live.

Ahhh, don't say that. You have to try new things. I understand the way you feel, and you should do it when you're comfortable, but do it at some point so you don't miss out.

Maybe in very small doses. I just don't ever want another blockage. I do try new things sometimes if I am sure I don't think it's going to be a problem. My ostomy is sure to find whatever I try and shoot it out in my bag. It hates onions, in any form. It gives them back to me every time. My only worry is if they come out how they went in, then they could get stuck in there. If I ate too many onions or something. I still eat good food; I still eat fajitas and stuff just without the peppers and onions on them. For example.

No offense, but that food looks scary. I don't think I would eat any of that. LOL
