Have any of you used baby oil as an Ostomy bag lubricant? I have a flush or slightly inverted stoma and want to make sure the pooh slides into the bag and not block the stoma.

Hi Klassmom,

You've come to the right place! This community is full of people who are ready to share their experiences and offer support.

Regarding your question, many people have found that using a small amount of baby oil can help with output sliding into the bag more easily. Just be sure to use it sparingly to avoid any issues with the adhesive. Some folks also recommend trying a bit of cooking spray or specialized ostomy lubricants if baby oil doesn't work for you. It's all about finding what suits your needs best.

Congrats on being part of this community! You'll find a wealth of support, information, and some really great people here. Don't hesitate to reach out with any more questions or to share your own tips!

That's what I use. Never had any problems.

My ostomy nurse recommended cooking spray. I get generic for cheap and it's easy to spread around the bag.

I use it on a daily basis…just a dab though…works great - turns bag lining into Teflon! jb

Especially at bedtime…if I must get up in the night, output is quickly released.

Thank you ladies,

Good information, very cost effective compared to buying  company brands.

If you use too much, it makes the bag leak at the opening.

Hey Iggie - I believe this is dependent on the closure method. Velcro, probably yes; clamp, no... ask me how I know... jb

Do it yourself (per Bill - DIY)

This makes it easy to apply a bit further into the bag - avoiding the opening…jb

G-Day JB,

You're right, it is the Velcro. What happened to you?

I use it religiously but it doesn’t seem to make much difference. But rubbing the leftover on my fingers (from smearing it around the bag) onto my scar is doing a great job!

I just use personal lube, like Astro Glide or KY Liquid. It's fairly sterile and also odorless, and you can buy it at any drugstore. It does not interfere with plastics and is completely water soluble.

Having an ileo with mostly liquid output, I haven't tried this, but my late cousin and I would play harmonicas together and use baby oil because lip chap isn't good for the harmonica. The baby oil works great, and on a side note, I cracked up my cousin by telling him 'baby oil is oil from babies.' 😊 Grin whenever you use it.

How much baby oil should I use?

I use a dispenser (as pictured above in the previous post) then rub the bag together to coat - works great 👍 jb
