Hi everyone 😊

Question for my colostomy peeps that consume cooked mushrooms: Do you find that cooked mushrooms cause blockages or other issues? Terrible pancaking? I really love cooked mushrooms in butter and wine, but have been reluctant to try after reading this is one of those foods to avoid. Thanks!!

Never an issue with pizza. Not sure about that weird way you describe. 🤷‍♂️

AlexT,

You have never had mushrooms sautéed in butter sauce and a little wine? So good!

Thank you for your reply.

I love your name, Karliegirl. I always wanted to name my daughter Karlie but never had one, only boys...

Yes, mushrooms are on foods to avoid lists, but I eat them, along with popcorn, and chew the heck out of them. I have an ileostomy, so I don't know if that's different from a colostomy in terms of blockages from food. Maybe try a very small amount, chew really well, and see.

Hello Karliegirl.
I have a colostomy and I eat mushrooms almost every day of the week. 2 of those days the mushrooms are raw on salads, the rest of the mushrooms are cooked with whatever is on the menu that day.
I have no problems whatsoever, but I understand that some people do.

It's all about experimenting until you find what is right (& wrong) for you.
Best wishes

Bill

Awe, thank you! That is so sweet of you.

Yes, I believe it's time to try a few and see how it goes.

I know your boys bring you great joy (I hope). I know they are thankful you didn't name them Karlie, haha.

Thank you for your reply 😊

I think this is less of a concern for a colostomy than for an ileostomy. Many of those "foods to avoid" seem to be bigger problems for our ileostomy friends than for us.

Never. Wine is gross. 🤮 However, I've had morel mushrooms that I've picked, battered in crushed saltine crackers, and then fried in oil. Those are good. Still no wine, though. 😁

I have an ileostomy and eat mushrooms all the time, raw and cooked. Never had a problem. Just chew well. Someone with a colostomy shouldn't have to worry.

I think that you have been given some great advice.

When I could still eat solid food, with my ileostomy, my only issue was that I had to wear large high-output pouches, which have a tube with a plug at the end, rather than a bag that folds up - and things like mushrooms and peas (as I could not digest my food) would get stuck, and I'd have to crush them before they would come out of my bag.

However, I have always loved mushrooms - just like I enjoyed eating food in general. My Dutch parents had a policy that you ate what was in the pot, and I can remember clearly how, when my mother was making dinner, my siblings and I would steal uncooked vegetables as toddlers, and we loved that, even eating raw potatoes.

G-Day Karliegirl33,

That is a great way to cook mushrooms, but no matter how much you chew them, they can become a problem. Chop them into pieces rather than slices and try a small amount to see if you get away with it. Let us know how you get on. I agree with TerryLT; as you have a colostomy, you will probably get away with it.

Regards, IGGIE

Thank you, Bill, for your reply. Almost a year out and still trying to figure out what I can eat and what I can't.

It seems like a constant struggle, but I'm getting better at it every single day.

Thanks IGGIE!

Good idea about cutting them into pieces.  Thank you for your input. I have missed mushrooms.

You've probably been missing stuff for way longer than you needed to. Enjoy. 😋

I can eat and drink whatever I want 🍷 🍺 🥙 🍛. Just try everything; if you find it does not go well, have another go.

So a lot of things we did and liked. Oh dear, unless you are asking for trouble, change your ideas and do what the medical team tells you. Mushrooms I found do not digest in an upper stomach; I would have to chomp them into very small mush before taking them down. Same for peas and carrots. Read up on what to do or not; a new world awaits.

I have an ileostomy. I usually only eat cooked mushrooms, and very often they have been sliced into smaller pieces during preparation anyway. But if I choose cooked mushrooms when I am eating out, usually at a breakfast buffet, I won't have a large quantity.

If I had a daughter, I'd name her Carly, as in Simon. Had a crush on her since 1970. She aged well and looks like Daryl Hannah.

Hi Karlie, I have a colostomy and eat absolutely everything. We are so fortunate that the food passes through the proper digestive route. Sometimes there are hard bits in my bag, but never a blockage. I love popcorn, nuts, fried mushrooms, salad, the works. Try starting with a little bit and work your way up from there.

I too have been reluctant, and the sight of a completely undigested mushroom slice in my bag was enough to make me cautious. I think if they are chopped up, they are less likely to cause an issue; it's an individual thing. It depends on how much digestive system you still have left and how well you chew the things that are more difficult to process.

Just make sure you chew them, you'll be fine. I love mushrooms and was disappointed when they said you may not be able to eat them. You just have to try and see if you can. I forgot to chew properly once, and a full slice came out of my stoma in my bag. I was amazed, and since then I make sure I chew. xx Good luck.

Every time I eat cooked mushrooms, I have blockage. But I have an ileostomy. It's a trial-and-error thing. When I eat any kind of steak, I have to eat Ritz crackers with it for it to digest.
