I have an ileostomy (2019).

Twice now I've had diarrhea that came from my rectum. I think it must have been food toxin. Has anyone else experienced this? My oncologist was at a loss.

G-Day Chiquis,

That is most unusual and needs to be looked into a bit more. Is your ileostomy permanent or not?

Regards, IGGIE

Hey there, the only thing that should be coming out of your bottom end is mucus and sloth. You shouldn't be having any kind of BM. I would go see your surgeon.

Hello Chiquis

As the others recommend, always run any concerns by the professionals for your own peace of mind; that's what they are there for.

Yes, it's permanent.

Yes, it's permanent.

I was referred to a surgeon who recommended a reversal. However, I nearly died during the first surgery. I was hospitalized for 60 days. The prognosis was poor. I'm 76 and scared.

Hi Chiquis,

Sorry to hear this. Hope it gets sorted quickly for you.

I have no rectum, but I do have a chalky beige color discharge from the wound (hole) where I was sewn up, which my consultant said I could have for years.

I am really sorry you have had this experience that is scary. May I ask why the doctor would recommend a reversal knowing it's permanent, and what did he say about what's coming out of your bottom end?

I'm sorry you're in this unknown situation. I would be scared too. Put one foot in front of the other and get checked, like these fine people recommend. I hope you get some answers soon.

I told the NP at the GI doc appointment. Then the GI doc referred me to the surgeon. Before I saw him, I had a CT scan and MRI. The surgeon said everything looks good and recommended the reversal. I'm glad that all these kind comments are finding this a very unusual and unique occurrence. It freaked me out. It happened twice during a one-month period of time.
