Advice Needed for Blister Under Ileostomy Bag Seal

Hi folks, I'm looking for some advice. This morning when I was changing my bag ( ileostomy) I noticed a blister on  my skin where the outer edge of the bag seal is. I tried to position the new bag away from the blister but in order to cover the stoma correctly, I wasn't able to do this. The seal is right on top of the blister.  Just to be clear  -the blister is not near the stoma but on the farthest edge of the adhesive seal. Any tips on what I could do? Many thanks.

Hey Janko, does the spot bleed when you change your bag? I had a bleeding spot about three months ago; it would just leak a bit of red into my bag after it was manipulated during a bag change. It didn't hurt, but I wasn't sure what it was, as I had never experienced this before. I waited it out, and it eventually stopped.

Thanks for your reply, eefyjig. The spot is not bleeding. It's just a raised water blister. Thankfully, it's not near the stoma but where the outer edge of the adhesive seal is. I didn't know if I should put something over it to protect it from the seal, or would that affect the seal and lead to a leak? What should I do for the best?

Can you cut a little off the edge of your wafer to let it heal without compromising adhesion? I'd be afraid of irritating it or bursting it when removing the appliance next time.

If not, I'd be exceptionally careful changing the appliance until it heals.

Is the blister out far enough that you could maybe cut around that spot and still put everything down and it will stay? Have you tried a protective powder?

Could be a granuloma. If it's a blister, keep a close eye on it; they can get quite nasty and need a dressing over them to help it heal that you get from your stoma nurse.

I just had a white, little blister appear at the tip of my stoma. I've left it alone. I think friction from my bag rubbing the stoma caused it. I'm going to use lubricating deodorizer on the area my stoma touches the bag. I heard silver nitrate can be used to treat blisters and granulomas.

I like the suggestions to cut a bit away from your wafer. When I had my gallbladder removed, it was laparoscopic with a small incision above my belly button. I remember cutting a little off the base tape to go around the incision, and that worked well.

They just used silver nitrate on me to burn away the hypergranulation tissue around my drain site. I was under light anesthesia and asleep... the silver nitrate was so painful it woke me up. They gave me more pain meds, but it was still excruciating.

I recommend you save silver nitrate as a last resort. I don't think there was another option in my case, but it was not fun.
