Is anybody applying for social security disability if they have an ostomy that has an extreme amount of output? I didn't know what the chances of getting social security disability would be or what helpful tips would be good to ask to be able to get social security disability. I even used more than the allowed amount allowed by the insurance company. They call it overage for the bags. Also, a parastomal hernia.

I got disability from my cancer and am currently on the Ticket to Work program, which helps me get off disability.

I recommend you go through a law service that assists with the process. It is not easy to dot all the i's and cross all the t's.

I take part in these forums almost every day. They and the people that contribute to them have made all the difference in my having the courage to live a normal life with an ileostomy. The people here are marvelous and come from all walks of life and from all over the world. Hearing what others have lived through has really helped me put my own experience in perspective. I highly recommend all ostomates and caretakers of ostomates to come join us.

I applied during my cancer and subsequent surgeries that led to the ostomy and was denied even though I was completely unable to work for 18 months and had no income. From what people have told me since, you always get denied the first time, and it's best to have a lawyer.

I was approved the first time, but I have heard that most people get initial rejections. My legal service even told me it might happen. I credit them with the first-time approval. There are a lot of little things that you won't know without help.

For example, I received a letter telling me to appear at a mental health evaluation at a certain date and time. I thought it was ridiculous since I wasn't claiming mental health issues. There was a number on the letter to call and reschedule. My legal service warned me that they get upset when you reschedule and can use that as an excuse to deny the claim. So I rescheduled my conflicting appointment with my oncologist instead. Such a little thing, but vital to know.

Ditto the advice from Susan and Kas. Get a lawyer. I worked for Social Security as a disability claims examiner. The last statistic I saw indicated that about 65% of initial applications are denied. At the first appeal level, called reconsideration, 85% are denied. Approval rates at a hearing with an Administrative Law Judge are about 45-50%. It can be an extremely long process. Among other factors, they will consider your age, the condition that led to you having an ostomy, and what complications the ostomy causes, such as frequently having to use the restroom. Above all, don't give up.
