Hello, fellow ostomates! I just got an order of ostomy supplies, and there was some information inside about a product called Par-Sorb. This product consists of gel packets that will dissolve inside the bag. The claims are that the gel makes the pouch contents easier to empty (I don't see how) and keeps pouch contents away from the stoma. Has anyone tried these? What was your experience?
Thanks,

Little Lulu

Not so sure about making it easier to empty, but if you have a very loose, watery consistency output, they thicken it up, so it may prevent leaks. A cheaper alternative is to put 1 or 2 teaspoons of porridge oats inside your bag to thicken loose output up.

I take part in these forums almost every day. They and the people that contribute to them have made all the difference in my having the courage to live a normal life with an ileostomy. The people here are marvelous and come from all walks of life and from all over the world. Hearing what others have lived through has really helped me put my own experience in perspective. I highly recommend all ostomates and caretakers of ostomates to come join us.

I've used something similar called Diamonds, and it thickens it, but you're not supposed to dump it in the toilet. Same thing with Pearls... 2 different gels... I'll have to try the oats thing... might absorb the smell too 🤔

I also use diamonds. But I didn't know not to dump them in the toilet.

Being an ileo for 8 years now, I do understand the bulk-up, thickening need.

However, the point being missed here is you need to bulk up internally, not externally.

1 tablet of Imodium 3 times a day does that for me. Other ileos suggested this. Some with short bowel syndrome take up to several tablets daily.

Having an ileo equates to liquid output. Fact. You lose nutrients fast. Dehydrate faster. Not good. Bulking up internally helps prevent that.

Bulking up your bag only adds to massive weight...does nothing for your health. Just my two cents worth learning from fellow ileos here. 👍
