I need to come up with a solution within 2 hours: I have an appointment I can't cancel, but I also have a severe rash, and there's no way I can put a flange on. I made it through the night without a bag. Could I just attach a bag somehow without the flange? I've read suggestions for dealing with rashes, but I don't have any of the suggested products, and anyway, how do you attach a flange on top of these products? The last thing I tried that was in my cupboard to calm the rash was Gold Bond powder. Seems to have worked. Looking forward to your suggestions.

Can't tell if this is soon enough to help... but just in case...

Hopefully, you have barrier wipes or similar. Apply the Gold Bond powder to the skin lightly. Dab, don't wipe, with barrier wipes. Let dry completely. Repeat if desired.

Apply the flange as usual. The barrier wipes should form a sticky enough surface to hold the flange. It may not hold as long.

This site is a godsend. As a newbie (colostomy on Nov 8, '21), I look at it every day for a number of reasons. Reading what people are going through makes me grateful that my elective surgery because of a severe case of IBS-C is nothing compared to what they have been through and are still living with.

I don't have to go to the hospital for anything related to my ostomy. I feel sorry for those who do and am in awe of those who can use humor to describe their ordeal. I identify with those who express their fears. I especially identify with those who are depressed because I am clinically depressed and have general anxiety disorder. How ironic that having a colostomy eliminated some of the depression and anxiety that the IBS created. I've been widowed twice and I'm on match.com.
I immediately included my operation in my profile and am pleased to say it doesn't seem to make a difference.

And there is much humor on this site and it's one of the reasons I enjoy it so much.

I could name numerous things I've learned from reading people's comments/questions/answers.

After months following on a daily basis, my only negative comment is I don't like listing the most popular members.
It's not that I don't like these people; I do. It's that I think it elicits some "Facebook"-like banter or comments that are gratuitous.

I don't do any social media and think that its merits are overshadowed by too much negativity.

Meetanostomate is in no way negative. I just think the gallery of "popularity" detracts from what is an excellent website that deals with a serious issue that causes a myriad of emotions.

This is going to be way too late to help with your current crisis, but I would suggest you get yourself some Salts Aloe Rings. Call the company, and they will send you free samples, then order them from whoever you normally get supplies from. Some companies in Canada don't deal with Salts, so if you run into problems, try Canmed Direct. They are in the Maritimes, but ship anywhere in Canada. This is the only product that worked for me when my peri-stomal skin was badly irritated and raw. You can put the ring directly on your skin, no prep needed, and it will heal it and give you a really good seal to boot. Good luck.

Thanks. I'll save this for next time as I know there will be one. Fortunately, the timing was right so that I was able to just apply a stoma cap and cross my fingers. I actually kept the cap on for the rest of the day. Small miracles.

I'll do that. Thanks so much for the suggestion. I was able to just apply a stoma cap but might not be so lucky 'next time.'
