Hi, when I changed my appliance today, it looked like this. Why is the leak stain on the outer edge and not under the sticky ring? Also, why is it dark green in color? Has anyone experienced this before?

Appears to be a faulty bag…

Yes, common color…I refer to it as 50 shades of green….πŸ˜‰

Thanks, if it was a normal leak, the sticky ring would have been discolored, right?

I think diet will play a role in that. Sometimes we get green output; otherwise, it varies a few shades of brown.

That's not a bad leak. How many days can you go with one appliance?

Leaks or breaches usually start from the inner diameter circle, outward.

I usually change my appliance every 5 days; this time it was 3 days because of the leak.

Not bad at all. 3 to 5.. That's really good news, man. Do you wear a support belt?

I used to wear the same appliance you have years ago.

Didn't work as well as yours.

Switched to a 2-piece system with a flange belt and have not looked back.

I wore the Hollister 2-piece system.

If it was due to the ring, it would show that you had output crossing over the ring, so I would say it's the bag or maybe you didn't get the bag snapped on fully. Did you hear it click when you put the bag on the wafer? Green is a common color for output. I had green output when I was in the hospital. It was so green. It was bile mostly. But it can be caused by the foods you eat. It's not wrong. I wouldn't worry about it.

I think the bag was attached to the wafer properly. The leak was underneath; maybe the wafer was faulty. It was on me for 3 days, and on the 3rd day, I noticed it. Nothing the first 2 days seemed fine.

I'd guess a faulty bag. Your application appears okay, or it would have leaked under the barrier ring.

Possibly a micro defect that didn't fail right away.

Yeah, maybe the wafer was faulty. I hope it doesn't happen again.

I'd guess it leaked between your ring and your wafer. No idea on the green color; I've never had that issue.

I remember having a leak that looked sort of like that; I never figured out why the inner part looked undamaged, but it leaked beyond that point anyway. My suggestion is to wear a barrier ring, and I'll bet you won't have that happen again.

What is a barrier ring? I have the sticky ring on and the wafer on top of it, plus stoma paste on my belly button side of the wafer.

That's definitely a faulty bag. Your output should not be coming out from there, only closer to the opening and on your barrier ring. And green could be spinach or any other green food. Very occasionally, I'll have some output sneak out of the filter at the top.

Okay, thank you. I called the ostomy nurse, left a voicemail, and have not heard back yet. I hope this is a one-off.

There have been a lot of faulty bags over the last year. Hollister was one with complaints of leaks.

I believe most have already said it.... it looks like the same wafer I use... and sometimes they can be bad. The outer ring (where it sticks where the leak is) doesn't always seal to it properly. I usually press the edges around it before applying it..... on occasion, it can also be from not having a good seal from your barrier and the wafer as far as the color..... green foods can do it. For me, it's bile that comes out since I don't have my gallbladder anymore... it can be yellow/orange from fats... if it's red... don't panic. I did at first and realized it was from me drinking a red Gatorade.

ALSO, if you weren't aware, you can call Convatec and let them know you have a bad box if it happens again, and they will send you replacements.

Yes, right.

Ah, the dreaded red Gatorade!

I thought green output was bile? I get green in my drain and sometimes in my colostomy bag.

I'm on a strict low-residue diet, so I'm not eating any green food.

It is bile unless you have been consuming something green. I will see it in the morning usually if, for some reason, I haven't eaten much the night before.

It can be from both. Depends on how much you eat or if it has artificial dyes. Most of the time, at least for me, it's bile.

The 'sticky ring' you are referring to is probably a barrier ring, so you've got it covered. I agree with the others; the most likely culprit is a faulty pouch.

Grape stuff will turn your output green too.

Wafer probably gave up the ghost. I also use Hollister and sometimes change as much as 3 times a day! Faulty materials if you ask me. Hollister 7805 Adapt Barrier Rings and the 8805 CeraVe Rings melt even faster.

AlexT

I use the 7805, and it's always intact when I change my stuff. I've also used the 8805 with no issues.

3 times a day? There is something wrong here.

The cera rings for me at least are a wafer saver.

5 to 7 days. Min-max.

Dunno why yours melt.

Could be defective. I have not had any issues with mine.

As per what Alex said, I'd say ditto.

Are you sure you have a good prep and sealing process?

It doesn't hurt to change every two days to prevent acid from eating your skin. I usually change mine every two to four days, depending on how my skin is doing. If your output is really watery, try eating some marshmallows. I had a big problem with watery output when I tried eating too many raw vegetables and fruits like I used to before Crohn's. I really miss them. I use 7805 rings, as the one with more ceramides seemed to melt easier, and I do use Ceraplus 11204 barriers, though. The Hollister products work well for me. I have tried other products but never found anything better for me.

Define "hurt"? Please.

Hurt, financially, to replace the appliance every 2 days?😳

Hurt, as the tug and pulling off the appliance every 2 days.??πŸ˜–

Idk about you, but that's a lot of hurt. Expense-wise and skin-wise, I'd rather do without.

There are certain "givens" when it comes time to change the appliance.

If you are wearing an ileostomy (appliance).

If you are wearing a colostomy (appliance).

Most people don't think about the acid-to-skin relationship when replacing their appliance.

It's a good idea. That thinking.

Most replace/change the appliance because of smell/leaks.

Some also change the appliance because they feel "cleaner".

Whatever makes you feel better, and what you can afford, then go for it.. but something is seriously wrong having to replace the appliance 3 times a day. This needs to be checked out. We are here to help anyone troubleshoot their issues because we have gone through it and found better. Found the real root of the issue.

Fixed or repaired daily. ⬇️ should not be a mantra.

Reminds me of an old FORD I once owned.😁
