I have been wondering what products are best suited to keeping your skin healthy, etc., around the stoma that aren't greasy?

G-Day Lewie,

In Australia, we have a product called "SALTS," and you can get them now. They are infused with aloe, which is really good for your skin. Get them to send you a sample, and if you're not already using them, I think you will like them.

This group has been my go-to during my loneliest hours whenever I've had a "bag blowout" at 3am and there was no one else in the world to talk to.

Because it's a global community, there's always someone here to lend an ear, provide advice, and just hold my hand if that's all I need.

Sure, there's also a lot of camaraderie, fun topics, and laughs, but the main reason I come here is for the total acceptance I get from the members. No one else on the planet could possibly "get" what I'm going through, not even my loving husband or supportive family.

The "Meet an Ostomate" forum is definitely a one-of-a-kind family, which I am very proud to belong to.

Any soap really just rinses the skin well unless you have skin problems; then you might need to use a barrier, temporary or permanent, depending on the problem. Changing the bag as soon as your skin feels irritated is the most important thing. I have dry skin, so I use Dermol 500 lotion to wash the skin around the stoma and have never needed to use any barriers.

Hi Lewie

The best products are what works for you, which in some cases can take time to find. I don't know what you mean by greasy, but I don't like the sound of it. I use the salts moldable ring Iggie suggests; they work well for us.

A skin prep will help keep your skin in good condition. I use the Salts ring with aloe as well. I have tried other rings but find the Salts ring to be the best.

Hi Lewie,

The best answer is nothing, unless you're having a specific issue. Any oil, lotion, or cream is going to be "greasy" to some extent. Even if it seems to dry completely, it's still leaving a residue on your skin that may affect adhesion. Putting a barrier over your stoma is no different than putting a bandage on your arm, from a skin healthcare perspective. Simply allow your skin as much air time as you can when you change your barrier, wash the area with clean water.........and you should be good to go. If you do have a specific skin problem, then get with a dermatologist and have them address it. Otherwise, when it comes to your peristomal skin care........less is more.
