Painful Bowel Movements After Loop Ileostomy Surgery

So I had surgery done for a temporary loop ileostomy on May 22nd. Most of my Crohn's disease is centered around my rectum with severe inflammation, fistulas, and setons in place from a few years ago. This was not an emergency surgery or anything but was just recommended by my GI and colorectal surgeon to help give my colon a rest and time to heal. Well, it's now July 29th, and I am still having bowel movements from the stool that was left inside my colon before surgery. It is extremely painful to pass the stool, and the hospital has tried multiple times with enemas through the rectum and enemas through my stoma under anesthesia, but nothing is helping to get this stool out. My latest CT scan at the hospital I am at now still shows stool in my colon, and with each bowel movement I have, I am in extreme pain in my rectum, and it has now started to shoot through into my front private parts, which makes it even worse. I curl up into a ball and am in so much pain daily. Has anyone else ever had this issue? Some doctors have said it is strange they did not have me do a bowel cleansing before the surgery, which I agree with now myself. I almost feel as if the doctor was negligent and has caused me more pain now than before the surgery. If I was in so much pain in my rectum area from the inflammation, then why would they leave me full of stool to pass after surgery? I'm trying to make sense of why it was done the way it was done. Two months post-surgery and still having terrible pain daily trying to pass stool that barely comes out. I just want this nightmare to end, and no doctor is willing to try a Botox injection into my rectum to help the pain. I'm not sure what to do anymore. Any advice or input is greatly appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to read everything here!

Hi, are you near Mayo or Cleveland Clinic in FL? They should have had you do bowel prep similar to when you have a colonoscopy.
I had to stop eating any food 3 days before my loop ileostomy and only do clear liquids, black coffee, and the things you're allowed to have the day before a colonoscopy. If they don't want anything in your colon before a colonoscopy, they should know better before performing a loop ileostomy without first having you do bowel prep.
Please find a different GI group/colorectal surgeon.

I hope you can find relief soon from what you're experiencing. Have you tried liquid magnesium citrate mixed with something like lemonade? Do Canasa suppositories help with the inflammation in the rectum at all?

I am scheduled for my reversal on 12/4. All my pre-admin stuff is completed and my GI signed off on the clearance letter this morning. I am super excited and looking forward to not having a bag. I just hope all goes well and heals well so I don't wake up with a temp bag which will lead to yet another surgery.

I have learned a lot from this website and will continue to be on here even after surgery. To all the ostomates out there, keep your heads up and keep pressing forward. We all have good and bad days. Best of luck to you all.

I will be sure to post my progress after surgery. I'm praying for you all.

Totally agree with CC, find another surgeon, ASAP.

Prep is not 100% necessary before surgery. When I had my surgery, the prep failed. It was partly because I kept vomiting the stuff and partly due to other factors. I arrived for surgery with diarrhea actively leaking out (mostly through fistulas in my urethra and vagina). I was terrified that they would cancel my surgery.

I told my colorectal surgeon about the prep issues when he saw me during surgical prep. He said not to worry; they had ways to deal with it. He pointed out that some people, such as those with traumatic injuries, had no opportunity to prep.

So something else went wrong with your surgery. Get a second opinion. You have not been given the whole story.

Your colon doesn't seem to want to function. You really don't need it. And ostomies allow us so much more freedom! Crohn's is not a nice disease and wreaks havoc on all parts of our bodies. Good luck!

Hi, I also agree with finding a new surgeon, but I wanted to let you know I had Botox injections in my rectum three times. The first one lasted months and gave me huge relief; however, like anything, with each injection, the relief between them became smaller and smaller until I had surgery for a colostomy. Good luck, as the pain is horrendous. I hope you get some respite soon.
