Has anyone had to have their stoma closed and resighted to the other side?

I have been in and out of the hospital since I had my loop changed to an end colostomy. The stoma has retracted, and I have an abscess due to surgery to reopen the skin, which is constantly healing over my stoma. My specialist wants to resight due to problems on my left side.

So sorry. I can't help on this one; I have never been down that road, but I am sure others will be able to help. I just wanted to welcome you to the group. May God continue to bless you….

This group has been my go-to during my loneliest hours whenever I've had a "bag blowout" at 3am and there was no one else in the world to talk to.

Because it's a global community, there's always someone here to lend an ear, provide advice, and just hold my hand if that's all I need.

Sure, there's also a lot of camaraderie, fun topics, and laughs, but the main reason I come here is for the total acceptance I get from the members. No one else on the planet could possibly "get" what I'm going through, not even my loving husband or supportive family.

The "Meet an Ostomate" forum is definitely a one-of-a-kind family, which I am very proud to belong to.

Hi WW, welcome to the site. I had resection surgery a few years ago with the stoma moved from the right to the left side. Make sure to tell the surgeon to have your stoma stick out at least an inch, as skin-level stomas are problematic.

"Due to problems on my left side" is quite vague. Find out exactly what the problems are and how moving it to the right side helps. One possibility is that there is not enough colon to extend an adequate distance above the skin. This could be because the remaining colon is too short or the layers of skin are too thick to bring the colon through with adequate clearance. You also mentioned an abscess, which means you have an infection in that area that will impede the healing process. If either of these scenarios is true, then re-siting is probably your best option. In any case, find out what the problem is, and your decision will then be more apparent.
