Hello all,     I had a ruptured intestine and had a colostomy end of December 2010.  I was fortunate to be able to have the reversal done which was end of July 2011.   I am careful with what I eat and up until now I have been feeling good.  I do eat fiber off and on but find that if I have too much my stomach bothers me, feel a little nauseous and I have constipation.  This is my problem now for the past week.   Just don't seem to be regular.     Anyone else have issues from time to time.    Really nervous about this as I don't want to go thru any of this again. Thank you all.

Hi grandmaJ - sorry no one has answered you yet!  I had a temp colostomy back in 2003 which was reversed and I had lots of trouble with the reversal initially (sorry to say I went back for a permanent colostomy in 2009).

I found enzymes to be of great help to me: in pineapple and other tropical fruits, esp fresh if you can get them, bacillus in yogurt - esp bifudus which is found in Mountain High brand, and probiotics either by mouth or in yogurt like Dannon.  Soluable fiber is better too: oranges.  Constipation may come from too little fluid in the colon, so drink more fluids, esp juice if you can tolerate - pineapple, cranberry, pomegranate - these have enzymes and are good for the bowel.  You may also need a stool softener or one of the newer laxatives available by prescription (I can't remember the names, but you can only get them through the GI docs).  Be esp careful of OTC laxatives, esp senna products - too harsh! and bulking products like Metamucil, Miralax - can be too gassy and crampy!         Best luck!

Hubz had a regular checkup with the oncologist on Friday (his numbers are improving), and as they were asking how he's feeling since surgery, they became curious about how he's doing so well with his ostomy, both physically and mentally. He credited doing research online, trying different things, and especially the support from this group. They were asking because they see so many patients struggling to adjust.

We described this group as folks with every kind of ostomy, some for days while others for decades, but all willing to share what's worked for them with the caveat that every individual is different.

We described the most valuable element as feeling like you're not alone in this. That really piqued their interest, and they wrote down the link. It seems they had a few people in mind that might benefit from the community and thanked us for telling them about it.

You know, we can't remember exactly who we learned about this group from, but we're grateful for it every day! Thank you all! 🌻
