What is irrigation? I have had my ostomy for about 5 years and have never done this. I wear a one-piece bag. Does that make a difference?

Hi Oldbiller1958

Irrigation is done by those with a colostomy. I have an ileostomy so I can't do that. An ileostomy has continual output whereas a colostomy can be trained to do output only when irrigated.

Do you have an ileostomy or colostomy?

Well it's just coming upto a year since I had my emergency stoma. Since joining MAOM I have learnt all different kinds of ideas to help with the stoma. Not only that I have made a lot of good friends who I can talk to. The beauty of this site is it's not just giving tips and ideas we talk about anything and everything. So thank you for giving us a great site. XX

Very helpful

In order to qualify for irrigation, you must have some descending colon left... and that colon must be healthy. I would suggest that you ask your doctor or ostomy nurse. If you qualify, I strongly suggest that you try irrigation. There are many here who will advise you, myself included.

Thank you, I know I don't have much of a colon left so I will check with my doctor.

If you are doing well and have not done it, why start now?

That's very true. Don't think I am going to change anything right now. Thank you.

There's an old saying "Who dares, wins".....and that is reason enough for me :)
