Describing the Sensation of 'Output' - Any Suggestions?

This topic is about describing what it feels like to have an ostomy, particularly when it comes to the sensation of output. The person sharing their experience is comfortable discussing their ostomy with male colleagues but found it challenging to explain the sensation to a younger coworker. They are seeking relatable ways to describe this experience to others.

Here are some insights and advice from fellow ostomates:

1. The sensation can vary depending on the consistency of the stool. Liquid output is often more noticeable, sometimes jokingly compared to a forceful spray.

2. When the output is firmer or chunkier, it can cause the stoma to itch intensely, and this is when the sensation is most felt.

3. Many people with ostomies feel little to nothing during normal flow. However, a sudden gush or warmth might be noticeable, especially with very liquid output or after consuming a lot of fluids.

4. Firm or bulky stool can cause the stoma to dilate, leading to a distinct feeling of pressure, tickling, or itching.

5. Gas release might be felt as bubbling or warmth in the pouch.

6. Awareness during sleep is limited, and some people only wake up if they feel a large liquid surge.

7. To help non-ostomates understand, some useful analogies include:
- Icing being squeezed from a baker’s piping bag.
- Silicone flowing from a caulking gun.
- Carrying a "portable toilet," which eliminates the urgency and location issues of normal bowel movements.

8. Using humor and graphic storytelling can make explanations easier and highlight the practical advantages of having a pouch over unreliable sphincter control.

9. The thin material of the pouch allows you to feel the warmth of fresh output through the plastic.

10. For odor control, some people find that a meat-free diet for a month can noticeably reduce or eliminate stool smell.
