Secure Stoma Pouch Fastening - Tips & Alternatives?

This topic is about finding ways to prevent an ostomy pouch from unexpectedly opening. The person experiencing this issue has a drainable pouch with a Velcro-style closure that keeps coming loose, sometimes in public. They are looking for alternative methods to keep the pouch securely closed. Here are some helpful suggestions:

1. Consider using an ostomy belt for added support, such as a Hollister belt.

2. Try using an external clip in addition to, or instead of, the built-in fastener:
- Use the original plastic tail clips that come with many drainable pouches.
- Consider a standard ConvaTec closure clip, which is known to last longer than Hollister clips.
- You can also use household items like a small binder clip or a 3-inch plastic freezer-bag clip.

3. Switch to pouches with different tail designs:
- Hollister offers a “Lock ’n Roll” micro-hook closure.
- Coloplast has a design often described as a long tail that folds over several times with side tabs, known as the “roll-lock” system.

4. Reach out to various manufacturers like Hollister, Coloplast, and ConvaTec to request free samples. This way, you can test which closure style works best for you.

5. Make sure the existing Velcro is sealed correctly:
- Clean any residue from the strips.
- Pinch one end of the closure and slide along the length, similar to sealing a Ziploc bag, until you feel the tiny “pops.”
- Firmly press the primary and secondary strips together each time you empty the pouch.

6. Change the pouch more frequently, every 3-5 days, to prevent the hook-and-loop from wearing out.

7. If the issue started suddenly, it might be due to a faulty production batch. Try using another box before deciding to change systems.
