Strange Odor After Appliance Change - Any Ideas?

This topic is about an ileostomate who notices a peculiar smell, similar to cat urine, when they first empty their pouch after changing their appliance. This smell only occurs on the first empty after a fresh change and not every day. The person is curious if this odor might be due to the products they are using or some chemical reaction. Here are some thoughts and suggestions that might help:

1. The smell could be due to an ammonia build-up, as cat urine is high in ammonia. To help with this, you might try drinking a mixture of 1–2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with honey and water before bed. You can adjust the amount if needed.

2. Sometimes, the odor might be from ordinary sweat or skin bacteria that gets trapped under the barrier. What you eat can also make a difference in the smell. If it's not causing any issues, it might be okay to just ignore it.

3. Diet can have a big impact on the smell of the pouch output. For instance, peppermint candy and certain meats can cause unusual odors like burnt rubber. Keeping track of what you eat might help you find any food-related triggers.

4. To help mask or neutralize the smell, you could try adding 2–3 drops of eucalyptus essential oil into the new bag.

5. It's possible that the smell is due to a chemical reaction between the output and the barrier or bag, rather than a change in the output itself. Trying different wafers or pastes, other than the ones currently used, might help identify the cause.
