Recipe for Homemade Deodorizing Lubricant?

This topic is about creating a homemade solution for lubricating and deodorizing ostomy pouches. The idea is to make a do-it-yourself version that can help control odors and provide lubrication, similar to commercial products, but at a lower cost. Here are some helpful tips and insights for making your own solution:

1. If you like using oils:
- Lavender-scented baby oil is a popular choice and easy to find.
- Be cautious with oils, as they can weaken the adhesive of the wafer and block pouch filters. It's best to use them sparingly.
- If you decide to use essential oils, keep the amount low, around 5-6 drops of peppermint essential oil per squeeze bottle, to minimize any negative effects on the adhesive while adding a nice scent.

2. For non-oil odor absorbers inside the pouch:
- Consider using peppermint Altoids, Tic-Tac mints, aspirin tablets, or a few drops of vanilla extract.
- Adding 1 teaspoon of baking soda during times of low output, like overnight, can effectively absorb odors.

3. A liquid recipe from an older post:
- Mix 1 part water-based lubricant (like KY Jelly), 1 part mouthwash, and 4 parts water. Shake well before each use.
- You can add a few drops of peppermint essential oil for extra deodorizing power.

4. Single-ingredient option:
- Some users find that straight mouthwash works well as both a lubricant and deodorizer.

5. Internal deodorant approach:
- Taking a daily wheat-grass powder supplement in juice has been reported to significantly reduce odor throughout the day.

6. For a DIY version of a commercial product:
- Coloplast Bravo Lubricating Deodorant contains water, salt, cellulose, and a proprietary ion mix.
- A homemade version could include ionized or distilled water, a small amount of salt as a preservative, a thickener like psyllium husk or finely ground chia seeds, and an antibacterial essential oil. Ensure good hygiene to prevent bacterial contamination.

7. Additional odor tip:
- An open box of baking soda can serve as a general deodorizer, similar to how it's used in refrigerators.
