Effective Solutions for Red, Weepy, Irritated Skin

This topic is about dealing with severe, red, and weepy skin around an ostomy site when typical solutions don't seem to work. Here's a story of someone who faced this issue and found a way to manage it after trying many different approaches.

- After seven years with an ostomy, the person developed severe skin irritation around the stoma. They initially used Hollister barriers but had to explore other options as their skin condition worsened.
- They sought help from a variety of experts, including dermatologists and ostomy nurses, and underwent patch testing to rule out allergies, but found no allergic reactions.
- Suspecting an allergy to the Hollister barrier fabric, they switched to the Coloplast SenSura Mio Convex Flip system, but this did not help.
- They then reached out to Nu-Hope Ostomy Products, where an ostomy nurse recommended a successful two-step treatment:
1. Mix one packet of Domeboro Medicated Soak Rash Relief (aluminum acetate) with 4 ounces of warm water. Soak a paper towel in the solution, apply it to the affected skin for 10 minutes, and then blot with a water-dampened towel.
2. Mix ¼ cup of apple-cider vinegar with ¼ cup of warm water. Apply this solution for 10 minutes, then remove it without wiping off.
- After these treatments, air-dry the area using a hair dryer, lightly dust with ostomy powder, warm the barrier and ring, and apply the appliance.
- This method requires 4–5 applications, with the appliance being changed every 2–3 days during treatment. It helps stop the weeping and provides time to address the underlying cause.
- For cost savings, you can download a Domeboro coupon for USD 4–6 off, use CVS Extra Care 40% coupons, or purchase from Amazon for about USD 14 or CVS for around USD 10 after discounts.
- The person emphasized that they had always cleaned the area with only warm water, avoiding creams, soaps, or wipes, yet the irritation appeared suddenly. A dermatologist suggested that the skin might eventually toughen up, but this was not acceptable as proper adhesion is crucial.
- Other members appreciated the regimen and noted it for future reference. One member shared success with using only warm water for cleaning around the stoma and recommended the Welland washer, advising against creams and wipes as they can cause issues.
