Gastrografin - Nasty-tasting but necessary for scans - Tips for a better experience!

Let's talk about making Gastrografin contrast scans a bit more manageable. Gastrografin is a type of oral contrast used in medical imaging, and it can be quite unpleasant due to its strong iodine taste, which might cause nausea and fatigue. Here are some tips to help make the experience a little easier:

1. If allowed, try mixing the Gastrografin solution with juice instead of water. This can help mask the strong flavor and make it more palatable.

2. Be prepared for a metallic taste and a sensation of warmth when the contrast dye is injected intravenously. These feelings are normal and will pass quickly.

3. Make sure to empty your bladder right before the scan. The dye can increase the urgency to urinate, and this step can help prevent any accidents during the procedure.

4. If you are diabetic and taking metformin, it's important to stop the medication for about three days after receiving iodine-based contrast. This is to avoid any potential kidney-related issues. Always confirm the exact timing with your doctor.
