Hydration Tips for Ileostomy Patients with a Love for Outdoors

This topic is about managing hydration and skin protection for individuals with an ileostomy, especially during hot weather. Here are some helpful tips and insights shared by others who have experience with this:

1. Hydration and Electrolytes:
- Eating salty snacks like plain pretzels and chips, along with drinking electrolyte drinks such as Gatorade, can help maintain fluid balance.
- Using Pedialyte powder packets mixed into water can provide an extra boost of electrolytes, especially in very hot climates.
- Ginger ale is noted to help prevent dizziness and abdominal cramps in extreme heat.
- Iced tea is another enjoyable way to increase fluid intake.
- Be cautious with honey-mustard–flavored pretzels as they may cause excess gas.

2. Managing Sweat, Itch, and Wafer Adhesion:
- Calmoseptine ointment can relieve itching but might affect wafer adhesion; some people tape the pouch to their body when using it.
- It's advised to avoid using Calmoseptine under the wafer to prevent poor adhesion, which can lead to leakage and skin damage. A well-applied wafer can often heal raw skin.
- For severe itching, a routine is suggested:
1. Remove the entire appliance and take a shower to cleanse the skin.
2. Air-dry while lying down for 15–20 minutes, keeping tissues handy for any output.
3. Apply Benadryl cream around the stoma, avoiding direct contact, and let it absorb fully.
4. Apply a fresh wafer and pouch.
- If itching is due to fungal growth, an antifungal cream, either prescription or over-the-counter, is recommended.
- Using 3M Cavilon or another 3M barrier spray can provide a protective layer before applying the wafer.
