Ostomy Flange Issues When Wet: Swimming and Showering Concerns

This topic is about a new colostomate who is experiencing issues with their ostomy appliance, specifically the flange or wafer, losing adhesion when it gets wet. This has made showering and swimming challenging. Here are some helpful tips and advice from others who have faced similar issues:

1. Check the fit and condition of your skin:
- Your skin might still be adjusting after surgery, and wear-time can improve as the stoma area settles.
- Ensure your skin is clean, dry, and free of oils before applying the wafer. Warming the wafer with your hands or a hair-dryer, or bathing in warm water, can help the adhesive bond better.

2. Experiment with different brands and request free samples:
- Some people have had success with Hollister and Coloplast systems, both 1-piece and 2-piece.
- ConvaTec 2-piece systems work for some, but others experience similar lifting issues.
- Try samples from various manufacturers to find what works best for your skin.

3. Use barrier or sealing rings under the wafer:
- Eakin Seals or Eakin Slims are stretchable, moldable rings that can help stop leaks and improve adhesion.
- Sure Seal Rings are being tested by some for swimming and hot tubs.

4. Reinforce the wafer with waterproof tape:
- Nexcare Waterproof Tape and 3M Transpore Tape are popular choices.
- 1" Micropore Tape is gentle but adds security.
- HydroFrame strips are strong waterproof framing strips, though results can vary.

5. Drying technique after showering:
- Use a hair-dryer on a low or cool setting to ensure the adhesive surface and tape are completely dry before getting dressed.

6. Consider appliance-free showering:
- Some people choose to remove the pouch and shower without it, especially in the morning when output is minimal, then apply a fresh pouch afterward.

7. Other practical tips:
- A smaller-diameter wafer might grip better on contoured abdomens.
- "Glad Wrap/Press-n-Seal" or similar plastic wrap can be used as a temporary waterproof cover if needed.
- Be aware that chlorinated pools and salt water can shorten wear-time, so you may need to change your appliance sooner after swimming, even with extra tape or seals.
