Managing Odor Issues in Children's Colostomy Pouches

This topic is about a mother seeking advice on managing odor control for her nearly 3-year-old son's colostomy pouch. She is concerned about the persistent stool odor that escapes from the pouch, despite using a pouch with an integrated charcoal filter. Here are some suggestions and insights shared by others who have faced similar challenges:

1. Odor-eliminating products:
- Na’Scent liquid drops have been reported to work better than other deodorants.
- Hollister 78500 Deodorant/Lubricant combines odor control with anti-pancaking properties.
- A few drops of ordinary liquid dish soap can be effective for adults, but use caution with young children as it may irritate the stoma.
- Placing 2–3 Mint Tic Tacs inside the pouch or using a piece of tissue moistened with mouthwash can help mask odors.

2. Dietary adjustments:
- Reducing high-gas foods like certain fruits, vegetables, and high-fiber items can lessen gas and odor. A lower-fiber, higher-protein diet might be beneficial.
- Peppermint-oil capsules, which are enteric-coated, can decrease bloating and leave a pleasant scent. These are suitable when the child is old enough to swallow pills.
- As children grow, they naturally learn to swallow less air while eating and drinking, which can also help reduce odor.

3. Equipment choices and sampling:
- Some users found that pouches without filters can stop odor leakage, as gas can be released manually by briefly opening the tail.
- It's a good idea to contact manufacturers like Convatec or Hollister to request free samples of different pouch styles and deodorants to find the best combination for your child.

4. Support garments:
- Proper stoma or hernia support pants can improve comfort and keep the pouch more secure, which indirectly aids in odor control by preventing leaks.

The mother is also interested in connecting with other males who have had a colostomy since infancy or early childhood to share experiences and advice.
