Electrical Shock Leads to Ileostomy Complications

This topic is about an experienced welder who has an ileostomy and encountered some unexpected complications after receiving an electrical shock while working with a high-voltage plasma machine. Here's what happened and some advice that came out of the discussion:

- After the shock, the welder noticed soreness around his stoma and found a bleeding hole when he removed the wafer. He managed the situation by packing the hole with gauze and cream, and then continued working.
- By the next wafer change, the hole had almost healed, but the surrounding skin detached and bled heavily. He sought medical help at a naval hospital, where it was confirmed that the area looked like an electrical burn.
- The welder took a few days off work, switched to a mostly liquid diet, and minimized appliance changes to help the skin heal. He humorously warned others about the risks of welding with an ostomy, likening the experience to a "lightning bolt shot out your arse."

Here are some pieces of advice and insights shared by others:

1. Be extra cautious when welding or using high-voltage equipment if you have an ostomy, as accidental shocks can cause burns to the skin around the stoma.
2. Seek prompt medical attention if you notice any unusual changes in your stoma or skin, such as bleeding, bruising, or tissue loss, especially after an electrical incident.
3. Maintaining a sense of humor and a positive attitude can be helpful coping tools. Staying active, like riding a motorcycle, can aid emotional recovery once it's medically safe to do so.
