Iowa Retiree Finds Comfort and Support on Ostomy Forum

This topic is about finding community and support after unexpectedly receiving an ostomy. A 66-year-old retired teacher and caregiver from Iowa had to undergo emergency ostomy surgery due to a colon perforation. After recovering in the hospital and a nursing home, she is now living independently. Although she enjoys activities like gardening, reading, listening to classical music, and doing needlework, she doesn't know any other ostomates in her area. She affectionately refers to her ostomy appliance as her new "BFF" and is eager to connect with others, regardless of their age.

Here are some helpful suggestions and insights for finding support and community:

1. Look for a local ostomy support group. You can contact a visiting-nurse service or your surgeon’s office to find out about meetings. Having in-person conversations can be just as beneficial as online support.

2. A fellow ostomate from Iowa mentions that life improves once you get the hang of managing your appliance. They suggest meeting up with others when possible.

3. A long-term ileostomate, who was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease in 1987, shares that adjusting to life with an ostomy can include setbacks, such as dealing with a colostomy, reversal, ileostomy, and an inoperable hernia. However, having a supportive family and staying determined can make living with an ostomy both manageable and rewarding.
