Silver Linings

Living with an ostomy can bring unexpected benefits and insights, often referred to as the "silver linings" of this life change. Here are some playful yet genuine advantages and helpful tips shared by those who have embraced life with an ostomy:

1. Say goodbye to clogged toilets and reduce your toilet paper usage significantly.
2. Your ostomy can become an instant conversation starter, often bringing smiles and lifting spirits.
3. Medical expenses related to your ostomy might be deductible on your taxes.
4. You have social permission to make "rude noises" without embarrassment.
5. Children around you may develop a greater appreciation for good health.
6. Most importantly, you discover a supportive community of fellow ostomates.

After recovering from surgery, many people feel a newfound freedom, enjoying activities like going to the movies, visiting the library, or grocery shopping. Here are some practical tips to make outings more comfortable:

- Plan your outings when your stoma is usually quiet.
- Carry a discreet "confidence bag" (6" × 4" × 2") with essentials like 3–4 pouches, faceplates, wipes, scissors, and disposal bags.
- Skirts can be more comfortable and better at concealing the pouch.

Here are some additional pieces of advice and insights:

- Accidents can happen, so always bring supplies with you. Never leave home without at least two barriers, several pouches, seals, disposal bags, wet wipes, tape, air-freshener, and scissors. Use a tidy and discreet container like a Lock & Lock box or a small leather zip pouch, and rotate your stock to keep seals fresh. For trips, pack more supplies than you think you'll need.

- To reduce mess and odor, consider using ColoMajic biodegradable bag liners, which allow you to reuse a pouch. Hollister pouch #5681140 offers a strong seal, even when full of gas. Skin and adhesive helpers like Cavilon spray, barrier paste, and LBF wipes can be beneficial.

- If you experience leaks or blow-outs, tape can temporarily reseal a wafer, and toilet paper can be packed around it until you get home. Keep spare clothing handy, and use humor to ease any embarrassment.

- To manage gas and odor in public, release air discreetly in restrooms or cars, or under clothing if you're seated alone. Remember, the gas is trapped, so the odor is minimal compared to ordinary flatulence.

- Build confidence by starting with short outings to familiar places with accessible bathrooms, like cinemas. Gradually extend to other activities such as shows, restaurants, swimming, road trips, and sports. Skirts or loose clothing can help conceal the pouch and feel more comfortable.

- It's normal to grieve body changes, and emotional support is crucial. Local support groups and online forums can be incredibly helpful. View your ostomy as a "badge of survival and courage" and focus on the renewed life it enables.

- Many people find lifestyle "silver linings" such as freedom from dirty public toilet seats, the ability to pass gas without concern, and a renewed appreciation for health, mobility, and the compassion found within the ostomy community.
