Today I lost a stoma-plug!

This topic is about a person who usually manages their colostomy with daily irrigation and a stoma plug instead of a pouch. They shared an experience where their stoma plug came loose and got stuck inside the stoma. Instead of rushing to the doctor, they decided to handle the situation themselves by doing another irrigation to flush the plug out. This approach worked for them, and they avoided what they thought might be a rough removal by a less experienced doctor.

Here are some helpful insights and advice from their experience:

1. The person used an anal catheter about 9 inches (23 cm) long for irrigation, believing that if the catheter didn't push the plug further in, the water pressure should be safe to use.

2. They acknowledge that doing such procedures on your own can be risky and have had negative experiences before. However, they prefer the hands-on approach over letting an inexperienced doctor handle it.

3. If you try a self-flush, be aware that irrigation might push a displaced plug further into the bowel, so it's important to proceed slowly and carefully.

4. It seems that commercial stoma plugs are hard to find in the United States, which can be a challenge for those who need them.

5. People with an ileostomy generally cannot use stoma plugs, so they will still need to use a pouch.

6. In case you lose a bag clip, a regular rubber band can be a handy temporary fix to secure the pouch outlet.
