Tips for Dressing with an Ileostomy Bulge

When living with an ileostomy, one common concern is how to dress in a way that conceals the pouch and minimizes any noticeable bulge under clothing. Here are some friendly tips and tricks to help you feel more comfortable and confident:

1. Consider wearing a soft ostomy wrap or waistband. This can help hold the pouch snugly against your abdomen. Just make sure it's not too tight, so you stay comfortable.

2. Opt for loose-fitting, longer tops. Shirts that fall below the waistband, such as long shirts or overshirts, can effectively hide the outline of the pouch. Vests can also add an extra layer of concealment. For men, shirts from brands like "Untuckit" are designed to be worn untucked and can help with coverage.

3. When shopping for trousers, skirts, or shorts, try going one size larger. This gives the pouch a bit more room and reduces any tension on the wafer.

4. Make it a habit to release gas and empty the pouch frequently. This helps keep it flat and less noticeable.

5. Experiment with the orientation of your pouch. While most people wear it vertically, some find wearing it horizontally inside a wrap more secure, though it might create a side bulge as it fills.

6. A one-piece appliance is often the slimmest option available, which can help with discretion.

7. Light compression garments can be beneficial. Snug shapewear tank tops, which you can find for about $20–30 at places like Walmart, and wide fabric head-wraps worn around the waist can support the pouch and delay visible bulging.

8. Bag covers are available on Amazon and other retailers. While they mainly provide cosmetic concealment and don't offer much support or noise reduction, some people find them useful, especially in intimate situations.
