Playing Pickleball with an Ostomy - Seeking Advice

This topic is about a 66-year-old pickleball enthusiast who recently had ostomy surgery due to perforated diverticulitis. Now, they are looking for practical advice on how to keep their ostomy pouch secure and comfortable while playing pickleball. Here are some helpful tips and insights shared by others:

1. Wear a secure, supportive layer:
- Consider using elastic ostomy wraps or repurposing inexpensive pregnancy belly wraps for support.
- High-waisted underwear or panties with Lycra can provide gentle compression.
- Yoga pants or other snug athletic wear can help hold the pouch flat. Some people also layer with Depends for extra stability and confidence.

2. Court routine and pouch management:
- Empty your pouch right before playing to minimize output during the game.
- Keep a water bottle nearby and stay well-hydrated, especially if you have an ileostomy.

3. Return-to-play pacing:
- Start slowly after surgery and gradually increase your court time and intensity as you feel more comfortable.

4. General reassurance:
- Many long-time ostomates, including those with an ileostomy, have found that playing pickleball and other sports is manageable once the pouch is well-supported. They only need to pause occasionally to empty the pouch when it starts to fill.
