Dealing with Persistent Unpleasant Odors - Seeking Advice

This topic is about managing real and "phantom" odors that might come from an ostomy pouch. Sometimes, people with an ostomy might catch a whiff of a stool-like smell and worry that others can smell it too. If the current deodorant isn't providing enough peace of mind, here are some alternative ways to control or eliminate the smell:

1. Sometimes, the odor might be "phantom," meaning it lingers in your nasal passages after emptying the pouch, and most people around you do not notice it.

2. Consider using commercial pouch deodorants or lubricants that others have found effective:
- Brava (Coloplast) Ostomy Deodorant/Lubricant
- Adapt (Hollister) Lubricating Deodorant
- Hollister M9 Deodorant Drops and M9 Spray

3. For less expensive options, try placing these in the pouch after emptying:
- Regular mint Tic Tacs (2–3 pieces)
- Altoids Spearmint (crush if whole tablets do not dissolve)

4. General air fresheners and cover-ups can also help:
- Poo-Pourri toilet spray (Heavenly Scent, Citrus) – use 1-2 squirts in the bathroom
- Any inexpensive body spray – give the outside of the bag a quick spritz

5. Other low-cost internal or systemic options include:
- Taking a 60 mg oral chlorophyll tablet daily, which some people find beneficial

6. Practical habits and troubleshooting tips:
- Have a trusted friend or family member do an occasional "sniff check" for reassurance.
- Empty or change the pouch before an odor develops; wear-time can vary from 1 to 5 days.
- If your pouch has a charcoal filter, cover it with a stick-on closure if odors escape.
- Ensure there are no leaks, as most real odors come from minor leaks.
- Reduce high-odor foods like onions and red wine on days when you need extra confidence.
- Remember that heightened personal sensitivity is common, and others rarely notice what you smell.
