Stomach Gurgling and Anxiety Post-Colostomy - Seeking Advice

This topic is about someone who is five weeks into their recovery after a colostomy and is experiencing some anxiety due to loud stomach gurgling and mixed output. They are trying to figure out if their diet, which includes eggs and Thanksgiving-type foods, might be causing these issues. They are also seeking reassurance and practical advice on how to manage their concerns.

Here are some helpful insights and advice:

1. In the early healing phase, it's common to experience frequent gurgling during the first 2-3 months. This usually settles down as the bowel adapts.

2. Stomach noises are generally not a sign of danger. They typically indicate that the gut is moving. It's best to ignore them unless you experience pain, signs of blockage, or very liquid output.

3. When trying new foods, introduce them in small portions and observe how your body reacts. If a food causes trouble, wait a month before trying it again.

4. Continue to chew your food thoroughly, but there's no need to count bites. Try to relax and enjoy your meals.

5. Specific food guidance includes:
- Eggs, whether hard-boiled, scrambled, or in an omelet, are usually fine for most people.
- It might be better to postpone eating green beans and other fibrous vegetables for a couple more months.
- Avoid or limit nuts, popcorn, raw vegetables, corn, salads, spicy dishes, fried foods, and high-fat holiday dishes until more healing time has passed.
- Many people tolerate hamburgers, tacos, pasta, steak, seafood, cheese, pizza, and most cooked meats when they are well-chewed.

6. For hydration and supplements, one member's routine includes an Ensure Enlive shake, Greek yogurt, a probiotic capsule, a protein bar, and sipping on Gatorade FIT electrolyte drink.

7. Be vigilant about blockage or pancaking. Dense, high-fiber, or "fun" foods can cause these issues, so empty the pouch more often when experimenting with new foods.

8. Emotional coping tips:
- Anxiety and "off" days are normal. Try relaxation techniques like sitting down, watching a movie or TV, and deep breathing.
- Confidence will grow with experience. Check in with ostomy communities for support.
- Having a sense of humor about the noises can help reduce stress.
