Advice Needed for Managing a Stoma in a Crater

This topic is about dealing with leaks when you have a stoma that sits flush with or below the skin, often referred to as a "crater" stoma. If you're experiencing constant leaks, it might be due to using the wrong products. Here are some suggestions to help manage this issue:

1. Consider using convex supplies specifically designed for flush or retracted stomas. These have an outward curve that presses against the skin around the stoma, helping it to protrude into the pouch and reducing leaks.
- Try a hard convex one-piece pouch like the Hollister 53900.
- A two-piece convex wafer such as the ConvaTec Natura Sure Fit 413179 might also be effective.
- Dansac offers a similar convex pouch, though the specific model number isn't recalled.

2. Consult with a stoma (ostomy) nurse:
- They can help ensure you're using the right products and applying them correctly.
- They can also evaluate if a minor surgical procedure to bring the stoma forward might be necessary.

3. Here are some practical tips:
- After applying the wafer, warm it up (for example, by microwaving a pack of hospital bath wipes for about 15 seconds and holding it over the wafer). This softens the adhesive or wax, helping it mold more securely to your skin.
- Losing weight can reduce abdominal fat, which might allow the stoma to project more and improve the seal.
