Struggling with Appliance Adhesion in Heat

When the weather heats up, it can be a real challenge to keep an ostomy appliance securely attached. The warmth and sweat can turn the adhesive into a slippery mess, making it difficult to enjoy outdoor activities. If you're facing this issue, here are some helpful tips to improve appliance adhesion in hot weather:

1. Cleansing and Skin Preparation
- Wash the skin around your stoma with Dial yellow antibacterial bar soap, which is non-moisturizing, to remove oils that can weaken the adhesive.
- Use a skin-prep wipe or film and allow it to dry completely before applying the wafer.

2. Barrier Rings and Belts
- Consider using an Eakin Cohesive ring or similar barrier rings from other brands to help seal and absorb sweat.
- Reinforce the wafer by taping around it or wearing an ostomy belt to prevent the edges from lifting.

3. Try Other Manufacturers and Get Samples
- Reach out to companies like Hollister or Convatec for free samples and try different flanges or adhesives that might handle heat and perspiration better than your current Coloplast Assura.

4. Karaya (Stoma) Powder Sealing Method
- Dust the skin with karaya (stoma) powder, gently tap it down with a moist finger, and repeat to create 1-2 thin layers.
- This powder absorbs moisture and forms a sticky, rubber-like barrier that can improve the flange's hold in high temperatures.
- Avoid using talcum powder or cornstarch, as they can break the seal.

5. General Tips
- Steer clear of heavy lotions, ointments, or moisturizing soaps on the skin around your stoma.
- Change your appliance during the coolest part of the day to allow the initial adhesion to set before you start sweating heavily.

These strategies can help you enjoy the summer without worrying about your appliance coming loose.
