Looking for a Local Ostomy Nurse for Prolapsed Stoma Care

This topic is about finding a local ostomy nurse to help manage a dual stoma prolapse. The person seeking advice had emergency ostomy surgery far from home and is now facing challenges with follow-up care. The stoma has prolapsed in two places, causing it to enlarge and protrude more when bending. While manufacturer-based ostomy nurses have been helpful, the person is looking for in-person support nearby. Here are some suggestions and insights shared by others:

1. Contact local hospitals:
- Ask to be connected to the Wound Care department, as ostomy nurses are often listed under Wound/Ostomy/Continence.
- Call every hospital in the area since availability varies, and sometimes smaller facilities have ostomy nurses.

2. Seek community resources:
- Inquire if hospitals host or know of local ostomy support groups, as attendees can recommend nurses.
- Use the United Ostomy Associations of America website (uoaa.org) to search by ZIP code for ostomy clinicians and support groups.

3. If hospital discharge did not include follow-up instructions, contact the original hospital for a referral. Visit the Emergency Room if the prolapse causes serious issues.

4. Consider specialized centers if local resources are lacking:
- The Cleveland Clinic in Weston or Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, has an excellent ostomy/wound-care staff and may provide referrals or arrange virtual visits.

5. Surgical revision may be necessary:
- A prolapsed stoma often requires revision surgery, possibly combined with hernia repair if present.
- If there are no local colorectal surgeons, plan to travel or temporarily relocate to a center that performs stoma revisions.

6. Personal experiences and product details:
- One person manages a 57 mm oblong stoma with a Hollister wafer (maximum size) and a peristomal hernia without leaks but acknowledges surgery might be needed for cosmetic or further functional improvement.

7. Manage expectations: Some listed ostomy nurses may not respond due to outdated directory information, but making the calls is still worthwhile.
