Allergy to Residue Remover with New Ostomy Bag

This topic is about an individual who has been living with an ileostomy for 30 years and recently switched to a new type of ostomy bag, the Confidence Be pouch, after their previous one was discontinued. They have been experiencing some challenges, including allergic skin reactions and leaks, and are seeking advice from others who might have faced similar issues. Here are some helpful insights and advice shared by others:

1. Eakin rings might be causing issues:
- Some people have experienced red, burning, irritated skin and leaks due to Eakin Cohesive Seals.
- Alternatives that have worked for others include:
- Brava Protective Seals (Coloplast), which do not swell.
- ConvaTec Moldable Durahesive wafers with Hydrocolloid Flexible Collar, which have been leak-free for some users for up to two years.

2. Test products one at a time:
- Try eliminating one product, like the residue-remover spray, for 1-2 weeks to see if your skin improves.
- Before using a new product around the stoma, patch-test it on the opposite side of your abdomen.

3. Gentle cleansing options:
- Use Dermol 500 Lotion to wash the skin around the stoma.
- Cetaphil Extra Gentle Daily Scrub is recommended by some for use in the shower, as it leaves no residue.
- Avoid alcohol-based cleaning wipes, as they can dry out and irritate the skin.

4. Adhesive and residue removal alternatives:
- Adapt No-Sting Adhesive Remover (Hollister) is considered mild.
- Baby oil can help dissolve adhesive; after using it, wipe away the oil with baby wipes, rinse, dry, and optionally apply calamine lotion to soothe the skin.

5. Protecting broken or sore skin:
- Comfeel Transparent Hydrocolloid Patches (Coloplast) can be placed over raw areas and removed at each change, which has helped some users.
- Coloplast wafers contain zinc, known for its skin-healing properties, and using a Coloplast pouch temporarily might aid recovery.

6. General tips:
- Consult a stoma nurse for an assessment and to get product samples.
- Introduce any new accessory slowly and monitor your skin's reaction before adding another.
