Managing Hydration with Ileostomy and Gastroparesis

This topic is about managing hydration for someone who has recently had ileostomy surgery and also deals with gastroparesis. The challenge is to maintain proper hydration while feeling the need to eat constantly, which can be difficult to manage, especially when returning to work. Here are some practical tips to help with hydration:

1. Make hydration a regular part of your routine. It's important to drink enough fluids to prevent kidney issues.

2. Pay attention to foods and drinks that might increase your stoma output. Some common ones to watch out for include fruit juice, coffee, tea, and certain artificial sweeteners.

3. Focus on eating foods that can help thicken your stoma output. These include bananas, applesauce, starchy foods at each meal, and even a few marshmallows after eating.

4. When replacing fluids, opt for those with balanced electrolytes rather than just plain water. You can dilute commercial sports drinks like Gatorade, mix your own low-sugar electrolyte solution, or use an unsweetened electrolyte powder mix.
