Using Spray or Coconut Oil to Remove Stoma Rings

This topic is all about finding the best way to remove ostomy rings, specifically comparing the use of adhesive-remover sprays with coconut oil. Here are some helpful tips and insights shared by others:

- Often, the ostomy ring comes off along with the wafer or flange, so you might not need to remove it separately.

- If you're using an adhesive-remover spray, here's a general technique:
1. Find the non-adhesive tab on the wafer and lift it slightly.
2. Spray under the edge and gently pull the wafer back, not straight up, while continuing to spray if you feel resistance.
3. A small squirt at the top can help the liquid run down, and you can add more spray if needed.
4. It's okay to use a generous amount of spray to protect your skin, but make sure to wash off any residue before applying a new appliance.

- If you prefer using wipes, start by lifting a corner and sliding the wipe between your skin and the wafer or ring, applying steady outward pressure until it releases.

- You can also try the warm-water method during a shower. The warm water helps loosen the adhesive, allowing you to gently peel off the flange, ring, and any extenders without using chemicals.

- For cleaning up any leftover adhesive residue:
1. Use an adhesive-remover wipe or spray on gauze.
2. You can also gently scrape off tiny bits with your fingernail.
3. It's safer to leave a few stubborn bits than to risk tearing your skin, as a new ring will seal over them.

- To make your products last longer, with the right technique, one can of Hollister Adapt spray can last for about 30 changes, which is around 6 months for some users.

- Be cautious with skin care:
1. Avoid using coconut oil, other oils, lotions, or moisturizers on the skin around your stoma, as they can prevent wafers from sticking and may cause leaks.
2. Opt for oil-free soaps; Dial Gold bar soap is mentioned as a reliable choice.

- Some of the brands and products people have found useful include Hollister Adapt Adhesive Remover Spray, Hollister CeraRing, Coloplast Brava Adhesive Remover Spray & Brava Moldable Rings, Coloplast SenSura Mio pouches, Aloe Vera Flange Extenders, and Convacare Removal Wipes (noted for their strong scent).
