Swimming with Adhesive: Tips and Challenges

Swimming with an ostomy pouching system can be a bit of an adventure, but with the right tips and tricks, it can be a smooth and enjoyable experience. Here's a story of someone who took the plunge and some helpful advice from others who have been there too.

One person shared their first swimming experience with an ostomy pouching system. They were thrilled to report no leaks in a heated pool and none after a shower. However, when it came time to change the appliance that evening, they found the wafer and extra support arcs had turned into a sticky mess, making removal quite a challenge. They had to use multiple adhesive-remover wipes and still ended up peeling off most of the adhesive by hand, which left a lot of residue. They decided to try a different brand of support arcs next time.

Here are some tips and insights from others who have navigated similar waters:

1. Consider using a separate "swim pouch" system. One person keeps two sets of appliances: an everyday pouch and a smaller "swim pouch." They rinse, dry, and rotate between the two, which also helps extend the overall wear time.

2. Try using adhesive-remover spray instead of wipes. Many people recommend spray removers because they dissolve adhesive faster and are gentler on the skin than wipes.

3. Be aware of different appliance and adhesive brand experiences:
- Coloplast Brava wafers can be difficult to remove after water exposure.
- Salts Confidence BE convex bags are reported to be easy to remove and leak-free, even after prolonged wet activity.
- Salts flat bags might become "crusty" at the edges after a shower, and some users have reported this to Salts customer service.
- Switching to a different brand of external support arcs might help reduce the adhesive mess after swimming.

4. Real-world stress testing can be insightful. One person regularly spends an hour in a sauna, then an ice bath, followed by 20 minutes in a magnesium spa before changing their bag. They generally experience no leaks, though sometimes there is minor edge lift-off.

5. Remember the importance of general encouragement. Many people emphasize that returning to enjoyable activities like swimming can boost confidence. A proper fit of swimsuit and bag covers also contributes to a successful experience.
