Colonoscopy Prep with a Colostomy: What to Expect?

When you have a colostomy and are preparing for a colonoscopy, you might wonder how the bowel-prep process will go. Here are some tips and insights to help make the experience smoother and more comfortable:

1. Consider switching to a drainable (open-end) pouch or a two-piece drainable system. This makes it easier to manage the frequent liquid output compared to a closed-end pouch.

2. Use a larger-capacity pouch, like a "maxi" size, to avoid it filling up too quickly.

3. Be prepared to empty your pouch more often than usual, as it will fill up fast during the prep process.

4. To minimize splashing when emptying liquid output, you might find it helpful to place a large plastic cup or similar container in the toilet.

5. An irrigation bag can be useful for handling the extra volume, although some people have found them tricky to use.

6. Bring extra pouches and other supplies with you to the hospital, just in case you need to change them after the procedure.

7. Before you go under anesthesia, remind the medical team that you have an ostomy and show them how to remove or replace the pouch if needed.

8. Many find that the overall experience is no worse—and often easier—than traditional bowel prep done via the rectum. You can stay in bed, sip the prep drink, watch TV, and simply empty the pouch when necessary.
