Tips for Managing Ostomy Supplies on Flights and Cruises

This topic is about managing ostomy supplies while traveling on long-haul flights and cruises. It shares practical tips and experiences to help make your journey as smooth as possible.

Here are some helpful insights and advice:

1. For securing your ostomy appliance during flights, consider using a plastic retainer ring, extra circular adhesive seals (as they tend to be more reliable than half-moon shapes), and a Velcro ostomy belt for added security. This combination has been effective in preventing leaks.

2. During the flight, you might only need to empty your pouch once. It's a good idea to use an ostomy deodorant spray and drops in the aircraft lavatory to manage any odors.

3. When preparing for your trip, check with your airline about bringing an extra carry-on for medical supplies. Most airlines allow this, but it's best to call customer service ahead of time to confirm.

4. Pre-cut all your pouches and flanges at home, as scissors need to be packed in checked luggage.

5. Pack a pre-prepared "emergency kit" with all the essentials you might need during your journey.

6. For used pouches, place them in blue disposal bags and then seal them in airtight zip-lock bags until you can dispose of them properly.

7. If you're on a cruise, dispose of used pouches and wipes by placing them in a zip-lock bag or a sanitary-napkin/continence-pad disposal bag. You can then put this in the cabin bathroom bin, and housekeeping will take care of the waste daily.
