Using Stoma Paste - Alone or with Skin Prep?

This topic is about using stoma paste, either by itself or with a skin prep, to prevent leaks around a stoma. The person asking the question is trying to figure out the best way to use stoma paste, as barrier rings alone aren't working for them. They are also concerned that using a skin prep might weaken the adhesive over time.

Here are some helpful tips and insights:

1. Trial and Samples
- Everyone's skin and stoma shape are different, so it's a good idea to try free samples from various manufacturers. Keep track of what works and what doesn't.

2. Using Skin Prep
- Many people use a skin-barrier wipe to protect the skin around the stoma from leaks.
- Make sure the prep is completely dry before applying the wafer or flange.
- Some find that certain preps work better than others for adhesion.

3. Going Without Skin Prep
- Some people skip the prep and still achieve a good seal. It's worth experimenting to see what works best for you.

4. Paste vs. Moldable Rings
- Paste can be messy, so some prefer using moldable rings to fill in creases and surround a retracted stoma.
- Others find paste useful for plugging small gaps.

5. Paste Application Techniques
- Paste can be used with or without prep.
- Apply a thin bead around the edge of the flange opening, wait about a minute, then apply.
- Smooth any excess with a damp fingertip, and a drop of warm water can help.
- A light coat of petroleum jelly on the baseplate can make cleanup easier.

6. Minimalist Routine (No Paste)
- Clean the stoma and surrounding skin with cool water only, avoiding soap.
- Use ostomy powder on moist skin, dust off excess, then apply a skin-barrier wipe.
- Fan-dry, press the wafer in place, and warm the flange with your hand for 5–10 minutes.

7. Change Schedule and Leak Control
- Change the full wafer every 3–5 days, and change the pouch daily if the filter clogs.
- Holding the pouch or wafer flat while warming can improve adhesion and reduce leaks.

8. Odor Management
- Deodorant drops like M-9, Na'scent, and Safe and Simple are recommended, though effectiveness varies.
- Some people don't use drops and instead rinse and reuse pouches at home to manage odor.
