Seat Belt Safety - Can Pouches Survive Auto Accidents?

This topic is about the concerns some people with ostomies have regarding seat belts and their potential impact on ostomy pouches during car accidents. The main worry is that a seat belt might tighten over the stoma pouch in a crash, causing it to burst and create a mess. Here are some helpful insights and advice shared by others:

1. Safety first: Many emphasize that the most important thing is to survive the crash. Being unbelted can lead to ejection from the vehicle and much more serious injuries than a leaking pouch.

2. Seat-belt positioning: It's recommended to position the lap belt below the pouch or at waist-level to reduce direct pressure on the ostomy appliance.

3. Temporary cushioning: For those who are newly healed, placing a small pillow or folded towel between the seat belt and the abdomen can provide extra protection until wearing the belt becomes more comfortable.

4. Likely outcome: If the pouch is stressed during an accident, it usually breaks the adhesive seal and oozes rather than explodes, which makes cleaning up easier than one might fear.

5. Alternative restraints: Some suggest using two-shoulder "rucksack-style" or roller-coaster-type harnesses to avoid pressure on the abdomen. However, these DIY adaptations might not comply with vehicle safety regulations.

6. Stoma shields: These rigid covers are designed to protect the stoma itself, but they do not guarantee that the pouch won't leak. Therefore, proper seat belt placement is still important.
