Celebrating 50 Years with My Stoma

This topic is about celebrating a remarkable journey of living with an ileostomy for 50 years. The person sharing their story has reached two significant milestones: turning 50 years old and marking 50 years since their ileostomy surgery, which they underwent as a baby. Despite being told they might not survive the surgery, they have thrived and now wish to share their experiences to inspire others. They encourage everyone to find at least one reason to smile each day.

Here are some pieces of advice and insights shared by others in the community:

1. Longevity and Skin Health
- Many people have lived with an ostomy for 30 to 55 years, showing that with consistent care, skin can remain healthy under a flange for decades.
- Long-term survivors highlight that life continues to unfold naturally, and having an ostomy does not prevent living a full life.

2. Mind-set and Acceptance
- Consider viewing your stoma as a partner rather than an adversary. One person even named theirs "Roo" to maintain a positive attitude.
- Celebrate milestones, or "stomaversaries," and focus on the journey ahead rather than worrying about aging.
- Let go of minor worries and use your experiences to help others who are still struggling.

3. Building Confidence and Routine
- Early support from ostomy nurses and home-health staff can be incredibly helpful, making both the technical and emotional recovery smoother.
- Try different products until you find what works best for you. Once you have a routine, changing your appliance can take less than five minutes, and the pouch often becomes something you hardly notice.

4. Support and Community
- Newer patients are encouraged to ask questions and learn from those with more experience. The community is a great resource, reminding everyone that they are not alone.
- Sharing success stories can provide hope, especially for those concerned about how their appliances will affect them in the long term.
