Hi,

I have had my ostomy for 10 years. No problems.
I am just wondering if Trump's tariffs will affect the cost of supplies.

? ? ?

G-Day Peach,

I wouldn't think they would put tariffs on ostomy supplies, but you never know.

Great site..I have had an colostomy over 30 years..and have been thru skin rash around my stoma,hernias(2), leaks, odor control , needed clothing suggestions and this site has helped me with recommendations and many ideas worked!
I wish it was around 30 years ago. Thank you everyone!

Ditto to what Iggie replied. Who knows what Trump and his minions will do?

I'm hoping the supplies shipped in the US are made in the US. If not, then I believe they are subject to tariffs. He isn't making exceptions for the auto industry even though tariffs will push vehicle prices too high for most middle-class families to afford. I have no confidence that an exception will be made for ostomy supplies.

Whether the tariffs affect the price or not, I think everyone will pay since it's kind of a necessity for us.

We will certainly pay.

I don't know about tariffs causing supplies to go up, but it will probably bring more manufacturing jobs back to the US, where they should be. Eventually, things will even out after the US stops paying out the a$$ while other countries get away with paying a lot less. You gotta even out the playing field.
I am totally stoked, though, to see all the money DOGE is finding! Finally, something is being done about the frivolous spending of the taxpayers' money. 👏🏻

Well, it looks like tariffs will result in my husband losing his American job. So I'm obviously not as happy. His company is considering closing their US facilities to avoid multiple tariffs caused by shipping items between Mexico, the US, and Canada. Instead, they will focus work outside and pay 1 tariff coming in the last time. For certain, they just moved a division out permanently, and we think my husband's division will follow.

That's terrible, Susan. I feel for you. I guess it's a lot easier to accept the tariffs if you or a family member isn't one of those losing a job. I wondered about tariffs affecting ostomy supplies, and I agree that it shouldn't for Americans, as the big guys like Hollister and Coloplast are both U.S. companies, even though they have Canadian 'divisions.' I'm betting we Canadians will be stuck paying tariffs.

My apologies. I don't believe I stated anything about me being happy regarding tariffs 🤔. In fact, it's a travesty. I'm sorry, Susan, if your husband loses his job over it.

It's quite tragic that the previous administration caused our country such detrimental economic turmoil that it has come to this. They spent four years getting us into this mess, so it's not going to be fast or easy getting us out.

What I am happy about is the fact that DOGE is finding all the fraud, corruption, and frivolous, useless spending that has been going on for years. It amounts to billions and billions of dollars, and putting an end to it will be helpful for our country and ‘we the people.'

What makes you think that "DOGE is finding all the fraud, corruption, and frivolous, useless spending"?  It appears that they're simply axing people without any evidence related to what you're claiming.  There appears to be evidence, however, that people are getting canned simply because of their involvement in things that the administration dislikes, such as scientists, inspector generals, and protectors of the environment.  I fully agree that the federal gov't can be cut back, but not with a partisan chain saw.

Awe Henry, you must follow the lame stream media. If you go to the DOGE website, they have it listed and continuously update it. DOGE.gov

Liger, I have looked at the DOGE website, and what they have listed doesn't prove they are cutting what you call "fraud, corruption, and frivolous, useless spending."  The website's so-called "Agency Efficiency Leaderboard" and its "Wall of Receipts" and its "Grant Terminations" give no specifics that prove any of those things.  They list a bunch of USAID contract cancellations, but then say the specific vendor is "unavailable" and the reason for the cancellation is "unavailable for legal reasons."  You buy that?  You can call the main new outlets "lame" but at least they're reporting what's going on.  Calling something you don't like "fake news" doesn't solve anything.

You have to be joking, Henry.

DOGE is not transparent with what they are doing, and to cut funding for advances in science, social security, and USAID is not cost-cutting; it is just plain ignorance. This group DOGE has put so little thought into what they are doing. This is a country, not the dollar store. America is here to protect and serve U.S. citizens and be a beacon of light for underserved countries with vaccines, food, and medication. Diseases travel far and wide these days; another worldwide pandemic could start again.

Wow, and I bet you also think that our borders were safe and under control because the “fake news” (your quote, not mine) didn't report on it. Just like the thousands of children who are still missing and those children who were trafficked through the Biden administration's wide-open borders? That's not true because the “fake news” does not report on it? Hmmmmmm🤔 I wonder who owns those news networks?

Because the “fake news” doesn't report on something does not mean it is not happening. I know the difference between fact and uninformed emotional opinion✌🏻

I understand you are misinformed, but it has only been a short time since the new administration came into office. If you actually watched an independent news network, you would know where all that money was actually going. Not where you think it was, I assure you.

The only ignorance is believing all the BS that they spew on an hourly basis. You are right where they want you to be. They absolutely love those who do not think for themselves.

Educate me. Please provide a third-party source that has verified the cost-cutting and dollar amounts and if the cutting of costs from an agency has been applied to the national budget to bring down the balance.

Hi Peach,

To answer your question...........I'd think the tariffs would in fact affect many ostomy products, but not all. Hollister has two manufacturing plants here in the US...........in Kirksville, Missouri, and Stuarts Draft, Virginia. I can't tell you which specific products they make there or where they source their materials from. Coloplast has one plant in the US........in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Convatec is a bit harder to track down. From what I've read, they have zero plants in the US and do all their manufacturing in a wide variety of other countries, as they're a more global company.

During and after COVID, we discussed how everyone should be stockpiling supplies in the event of another "supply chain disruption" or worse (like a war with China). I'm guessing many didn't heed that advice. Assuming everything is still available but will just cost more.....then I'd guess the insurance companies will have to eat the cost increase, as they can't change your deductible.........until it's time to renew your policy. Then they'll surely pass on the cost via increased rates. Might be time for some folks to start buying aluminum plates, silicone caulk, Ziplock bags, and duct tape. Then just contact Bill to find out how he works his DIY magic!! After all..........necessity IS the mother of invention!!!

I have no opinion regarding the tariffs or not, but I have a logistics and economics degree. The people who will pay the tariffs will be the American consumer; that is a given.

The tariffs will be passed along the chain until the end user.

Hi Maried,

Let me see if I can help you out here. First, the money DOGE is saving is money not yet spent, as opposed to what has been spent frivolously that they're making lists of. So the money they're saving is what has been allocated by Congress for these programs for this year that hasn't been spent yet. Our federal budget runs in a yearly fiscal cycle. So any money not spent in the fiscal year it was programmed for is simply returned to the Treasury where it would sit until it was reprogrammed to help pay part of next year's budget. But in our case, the money returned doesn't exist in the first place, as it's all borrowed, which is why we're like $37 trillion in debt. What that means is that when Congress figures out next year's budget, it won't need to borrow as much money as they would have had these wasteful programs not been shut down. Or looked at another way……..the Treasury has to sell bonds to generate all the money Congress spends……so with less money needed by Congress next year, the Treasury will have to sell fewer bonds. So until the deficit is actually zeroed out, we're not really saving money……….just borrowing less. I'm sure your grandkids and great-grandkids will approve.

Hi Kiwi,

Well, I don't have the degrees you do…but I'm still going to say you're only half right. Since the countries we're placing tariffs on are putting reciprocal tariffs on our goods, their citizens will also be paying the price, not just us. The whole point of the tariffs is to restore even trade, or in this case, get it a little less one-sided. I'm sure they taught you why that's important, so I won't go there. The reality is the tariff stuff is just a game to see who blinks first. And usually, the country with the worse economy is the one that blinks. Things are so out of whack with our trade deficit that something has to be done or our currency will be completely worthless. Other presidents have had the opportunity to make trade between the US and other countries more fair, but never did. Shit, they're the ones that got us in this mess. We're now at a make-or-break point, and something needs to be done. Pretending everything is fine when we don't tax imports and everyone else taxes our exports just isn't working. It's time to bring manufacturing of key products back to the States. I think COVID made that perfectly clear when we had to rely on everyone but ourselves for the supplies we needed. So yeah, it might be a bit painful to get through, but sometimes…just sometimes…the end does justify the means. Obviously, we'll have to wait and see…but when all is said and done…I predict a happy ending.

But can anyone other than the DOGE prove or detail the actual savings/cost cutting and from where and the amounts being saved after the firing and closure of agencies? Are they working with accounting agencies?

The only thing I know about Musk is he is ultra-rich, has 13 or 14 kids by many different women, and is a huge Trump donor. I need proof in dollars and cents verifiable by a trustworthy third party.

Hi w30bob,

The reason trade gets all out of whack is that large manufacturers in first-world countries have moved manufacturing to countries with lower labor costs; hence, the USA imports way more from China than it exports. This has been good for American consumers in cheaper goods and good for the profit margins of the importers. But the downside is the loss of local jobs. I am in New Zealand, an agricultural exporting country; this has happened here also. But I am not convinced that there will be a happy ending, but I am more than happy for you to say I told you so.
