My intestines are usually pretty fast, but there have been times that I was blocked after eating roughage because I was dieting. I told my husband that pizza never blocked me up. Not that I eat it, but I'd rather do that than end up having surgery. No matter how fat I get, I will never try these drugs because I don't want to take the chance of creating this problem.

Sorry you had this problem.

Hi Iggie,

I believe you are right about what humans were meant to eat. The carnivore diet works well for me, and the science behind why it works makes sense, in my opinion.

So many people lose their minds and say the carnivore diet is bad for you, but hail the vegan diet as the greatest thing you could ever do for health. One extreme is vilified (unjustly), while the other is somehow blindly accepted and praised, which makes absolutely no sense.

G-Day kdel,

I totally agree with you about the vegan diet; they all have to take lots of vitamins that they can't get from vegetables, but you can get all the vitamins you need from meat.

Good luck, I'm just going to cook a rib-eye steak.

I had diverticulosis (no infection) same meds for the last 10-20 years. Did Monjaro 2.5 for 3 months, fine - no problem. Went to the 5 mg dose, and that month ended up with an upper GI bleed that almost killed me! I spent almost 1 year in the hospital, had blood transfusions/dialysis, and had a portion of my intestine and appendix taken out. I was healing in the hospital, turned septic, and ended up with an ostomy.

…PLEASE BE CAREFUL AND AWARE of what to watch for; they all slow down your GI tract. I firmly believe it stopped mine, which caused the GI bleed and sepsis, etc. I literally almost/should have died 7 times …(and that was prior to the ostomy!)

Good luck!

A good lesson is that drugs are the least best way to lose weight. Eat less, but it would have been better if you hadn't overeaten in the first place.

I have had an ileostomy for 34 years.

I had major foot surgery in September, and exercising is painful for me. I am still having lots of complications. It is easy for everyone who does not know (and I neglected that tidbit) to say exercise. I do control my calorie intake, but the weight just adds up.

I have an ileostomy and struggle with losing weight, but I find that logging my food works best for me. I've had the most success with a free app, fatsecret.com. You have the freedom to eat what you like, but obviously, if you have a huge slab of cheesecake, the rest of your food for the day will need to be low in kj/cal so that you don't exceed your daily allowance. Good luck.

Apart from the expense, the possible side effects are enough to put me off.

My GP gave me a 2-month supply of Ozempic, and I gained 10 pounds. I was so depressed I hardly got out of bed, so it sure didn't do me any good. I was hoping it would work as I tried eating all the raw fruits and vegetables I really love and had liquid rushing into my bag, and since I have a loop colostomy, it was also running out of my fistula. It's worth a try as it may work for you. I don't think the ostomy makes any difference.

I was on Ozempic and then Wegovy for 2 years before my surgery. Since stopping, I have gained 15 pounds. I also need these drugs to regulate my blood sugar as my A1C trends towards 7. So basically, I have the same question. Can I go back to these drugs to maintain my blood sugar?

I was thinking the same thing! Ozempic helped my IBS and gave me normal stools, which was such a joy. Now, since I have the colostomy due to cancer, all I have are watery, leaky stools again. I gained 15 pounds, and my blood sugar is up from 80 to over 100.

Yes, I think that people who have struggled with loose stool/diarrhea definitely benefit from this drug. It helped me before my surgery. Since I have been off it since surgery, I have gained 15 pounds and am back to liquid stool, constantly changing bags and experiencing constant leakage!

Be careful as you're restricting yourself to starvation with low calories.

800-900 calories per day is not sustainable and totally unhealthy. Will you lose weight? Of course! But can you live that way for the rest of your life? Absolutely not! I would never encourage anyone to try that pathway. There are healthier ways to do it, and this is no disrespect to infinitycastle. I know her struggle, and I've been there for a lifetime, and now having an ileostomy has only made it harder to lose weight. I'm like a lot of ileostomy patients and hungry all the time, but I know what works and what doesn't, and starving is never the answer. Even if you do lose weight (and you will!), it will only be temporary because, as I've already said, it is not sustainable for a lifetime. I would not encourage anyone to take that pathway. No offense!!

Then just cut back as much as you can. You won't die, and hunger has never killed anyone, but overeating will not end well. Just cut back.

I made a comment about your diet, but I realize I didn't say enough. Under 1,000 calories throws your body into starvation mode, which means you aren't burning any calories at all. I watched a show one time about a famous ballerina who had starved herself so much to stay thin that at 54 years old, her skeleton was so weak she needed a walker. 1,200 to 1,500 calories allows you to cover your nutritional needs. When I had a Crohn's attack with diarrhea for over 2 months, I didn't lose an ounce as my body was desperate to hold my weight. Eating less is the way to lose weight, but it's imperative to be nourished. I've been fat for 30 years and gained and lost the same 60 pounds multiple times and found exercise doesn't really help weight loss. At 72 years old, I don't starve myself anymore. When I was young, I smoked 2 packs of cigarettes a day, which suppressed my appetite, but as we all know, it also kills you (I quit in 1985). I suggest you talk to a qualified doctor about safe dieting. It's a marathon, not a sprint.

Kyle, this sounds like a story that is trying to convince yourself of not being able to lose weight. If you were to eat 900 calories of protein like meat as opposed to 900 calories of cakes and cookies, it would help. And you said exercise doesn't help; maybe it doesn't if you only walk 500 feet and give up, but if you were to walk, say, 1 mile, it would help. So if, as you say, you lost the same 60 pounds multiple times over and over again, then at some point you were doing something right and then gave up and went back to cake and cookies. The main thing to lose weight is commitment and dedication.

Thanks for the suggestions.  Funny thing is that when I was working I walked an hour a day and it didn’t make a difference.  I am 72 yo now and I don’t really care about weight loss at this stage of the game.  The only way to lose weight is to eat less just ask any fat person about dieting - we all know sugar is the real culprit not fat.  For years I loved eating raw fruits and veggies but since Crohn’s that is no longer an option.  It’s not healthy to eat less than 1200 calories a day because you ultimately miss out on essential nutrients.  What I have found is fat people are only acceptable if they keep saying they want to lose weight.  Thanks to Neanderthals my fat is glued on and without that I would have succumbed to my Crohn’s attack in 2016 as I didn’t lose an ounce but my hair fell out and my nails took a hit.  My potassium was so low the doctor gave it to me intravenously and orally.  My only goal is not to yoyo my weight anymore even if that means I am a fat person.  My mother died of a heart attack at 52 yo and weighed 117 pounds - being thin didn’t do her any good.  It might be time for word FAT stopped meaning loser.

Maybe you already know this but big tobacco bought heavily into ultra processed food which is advertised every few minutes on television - instead of cigarettes to remain thin we have junk food to fatten us all up.  Mass brainwashing does work, eh!

Yes, I take Ozempic and am losing weight. If I were able to move around or exercise, I am sure the weight would come off quicker. I've lost about 12 lbs in 4 months, and I don't have any problems with the meds.

It's easy for you to say. I have a busted-up foot since September. I have a very hard time getting around. Your comment had nothing to do with my question about using weight loss drugs.

From what I have gathered, some people are very judgmental and uninformed, so we need to ignore them. As I commented before, Ozempic didn't work for me, but it may work for you. There is also tirzepatide, but I haven't tried it. It's a little different, and it's also used for sleep apnea, which interests me. I had to give up CPAP as they quit making the one mask I could sort of stand with lots of Imovane. Not sure sleeping pills are that great, and that was the only way I could stand the mask. I have claustrophobia and can't stand anything on my face or neck. I had back surgery, a laminectomy, in 1995, and I have fibromyalgia and have had knee surgery, so I know how difficult it is to exercise. If you can afford it, maybe you can get some pointers to exercise your upper body. I keep a ten-pound weight in the bathroom and do reps of 8 a few times a day for my biceps and triceps. Good luck.
