Yes, I have an ileostomy and developed a hernia as well .  The doc told me this is normal and most will eventually have a hernia...not what I wanted to hear as I struggle with decision to have a reversal however, if my hernia gets any larger and needs to be repaired I will opt to "get the works"....hernia surgery and reversal.....

wishing you the best.....just breathe

Hubz had a regular checkup with the oncologist on Friday (his numbers are improving), and as they were asking how he's feeling since surgery, they became curious about how he's doing so well with his ostomy, both physically and mentally. He credited doing research online, trying different things, and especially the support from this group. They were asking because they see so many patients struggling to adjust.

We described this group as folks with every kind of ostomy, some for days while others for decades, but all willing to share what's worked for them with the caveat that every individual is different.

We described the most valuable element as feeling like you're not alone in this. That really piqued their interest, and they wrote down the link. It seems they had a few people in mind that might benefit from the community and thanked us for telling them about it.

You know, we can't remember exactly who we learned about this group from, but we're grateful for it every day! Thank you all! 🌻

Very helpful

Hi. Sorry about your hernia. But don't let it get too far into your head.

I've had one for 6 or 8 months and a colostomy for about 2-3/4 years. So I'm not terribly experienced at either. So far, though, the hernia is more of an oddity than an actual problem. It's caused no discomfort whatsoever. Naturally, I'm a bit cautious about lifting or other doing things that put a lot of strain on the abdomen. So I have adjusted the way I do some things (shovelling snow takes way more time than it used to) but at the end of the day, nothing has really changed.

Don't ignore the fact that you have a hernia. Keep it always in mind. But as a whisper in the back of your mind rather than a screaming, flashing neon sign in the forefront.

There is plenty of info available on appropriate exercises for the 'parastomally herniated'. However, it's a bit contradictory so I'll not post links here. Please learn as much as you can from sources you trust and make your own decision in that regard.

So to sum up;  be a little careful and Don't Worry, be Happy!

Best of luck to you,

Sterling

Hi, Yes I also was told it was normal but I ended up with a couple of them that got rather large, so surgery was done, at the same  my colostomy was changed to an ileostomy, also had a bowel repair in readiness for a reversal-thanks to Covid I’m still waiting. On top of all that had a hysterectomy but although it was a shock, surgeons made the right call as I originally had cancer cells there.

I agree this is a great place to get ideas and appreciate what others go threw also appreciate their willingness to share their experiences, I think this is only my second or maybe third post.

Good luck with everything.
