Hi, has anyone had any success with surgery for a stomal hernia? Is it worth taking the risk?

I've always been told it's never a good idea to have surgery, so unless it is needed, try to live with it.

Yes, I have a colostomy. I have had two; the first repair lasted less than a year. The second one I had repaired in 2004, and it is still holding. There is no longer a large grapefruit-sized bulge. The second one was done by a surgeon who had done the procedure before. My bags were no longer sticking after just a few hours, and it was painful; it felt like a large brick hanging off my side.

Hello fellow ostomates, my life has changed since I met this wonderful French Canadian lady on this site on 3-17-2013. We were married on 12-20-2014 in Phoenix, AZ.

Very helpful

G-Day Ozzie, I can't believe what Cplumber said about not having any surgery. I got a parastomal hernia over a year ago now, and no matter what people say, they will only get bigger if you do nothing about it. As soon as I was diagnosed with mine, I went to see the surgeon right away and had the operation within a couple of weeks. I am now in 100% better condition than I was and as fit as I can be for 77. Regards, IGGIE

Thanks for that info! I set my mind to losing weight this year by eating better and exercising. Working so far, down 65 pounds, but now all I can "see" in the mirror is that huge bulge around my stoma. Maybe it's worth investigating a fix...

Thank you, everyone, for your replies. I think it's worth consulting with the surgeon to get an opinion. I don't really want to live with it forever. Thank you to everyone for the support and guidance in this group.
