Stoma leaks because of a large hernia behind the stoma, what to do?

Hello doryns.
The convex flanges would be the best ones to try.
I couldn't get on with them because my hernia was always the problem.

Hence, I started making my own baseplates to fit my body shape and use prosthetic glue and belts to keep them in place.
I have not had any leakage problems since.

There are pictures and explanations on my profile if you are interested

I take part in these forums almost every day. They and the people that contribute to them have made all the difference in my having the courage to live a normal life with an ileostomy. The people here are marvelous and come from all walks of life and from all over the world. Hearing what others have lived through has really helped me put my own experience in perspective. I highly recommend all ostomates and caretakers of ostomates to come join us.

Interesting how you make DIY baseplates - but you lose me at DIY adaptability…. How does one actually attach a preferred bag (aka pouch) to a DIY baseplate? You mention glue and belts…still confused. It has taken me almost 4 long years trying to discover proper fits (yes, and mental fits as well) to all the highly developed products in the land of “OSTOMY” - and yet I still struggle with seeping issues around the stoma. Speaking of the land of ostomy…. hmmm must be a song or a poem somewhere in that title … perhaps you have already written one…

Hello JB.
Just a quick note of clarification:

The bag/sleeve will stick straight onto the baseplate without any special assistance or extra glue. It is sticking onto PVC so the adhesion is perfect.
The probond prosthetic glue is used to stick my baseplate to my skin
I hope this makes things clearer for you.

I use Coloplast "SenSura Mio Convex Flip." I use the two-piece, but they do have a one-piece. The bags are removed easier, and clean-up is less of a mess, IMHO.

G-Day doryns, Very simple: get rid of the hernia; they will get bigger, so do it now. Regards, IGGIE

I've found the best pouch is the Convatec ActiveLife hard convex pouch. It's a one-piece, and I'm not sure if they make a two-piece or not, but the pouch flange is hard, so it really helps the stoma stick out in the pouch. Being that it's hard convexity, the stoma does not sink back down, as it does with those soft convex pouches. I do believe it is the only hard convex pouch available.

But yeah, as someone else mentioned, get that hernia fixed and be careful about lifting after you get it fixed.

This exact product (and method of affixing) on only one day - and selected by a superb wound and ostomy hospital nurse - almost ripped all my skin off. I returned to my two-piece Hollister after gently removing the adhesive paste mess and have had absolutely no issues. A year ago, I went one size larger due to a huge parastomal hernia. I change the bag and flange every other day on average now vs. longer, eliminating any marginal mess despite emptying and cleaning/deodorizing very frequently. I also took off weight and can wear a smaller size as the stoma grows and shrinks a lot but remains perfectly healthy. I clean the flange with water and foam soap or saline or peroxide, rinse the bag with water and mouthwash. Dry well and use Lamisil Defensive powder vs. Stomahesive for antifungal and irritation protection. Inexpensive and zero issues going on almost three years, knock wood. Good luck in finding a workable solution and perhaps sharing it.
